Is there any tax that should ever be repealed?
In other words are there any taxes out there that need to be gotten rid of?

2. Any poll tax. They are absolutely indefensible.
I would like to see ALL regressive taxes eliminated. That includes sales taxes.

3. Hell YES!
How about that stupid one on your phone bill that was established to fund the Spanish American war??? I know it's only a few cents for each bill, but it's BS!

No State should charge sales tax on FOOD! Those that do should repeal THAT ONE!

Some States charge a tax on year end inventory for all businesses. That's just dumb. The businesses simply run out their inventory before the end of the year, and place their new orders in Jan!

I think they should repeal any taxes on SS for retired people. At the very least, it shouldn't be applicable to anyone who has a total income under $50,000.

Just a start!!!!

4. Sales taxes are inherently regressive.
Plus they serve as a choke on the economy - people can't afford to spend as much. I wouldn't be sad to see sales taxes go away.

5. Taxes that are used as an instrument of social policy
which intrinsically fail for the most part.

Given the mess that is the tax code, a major simpifiaciton is called for. Not necesarily the a flat tax or the fair tax crap that Forbes is peddling, but a simply one based on the need to raise money for the common good.

9. payroll taxes are hyperregressive and should go bye-bye
medicare/fica should be funded out of the income tax. which would naturally need to be higher, but it would avoid disproportionately taxing labor income (vs. investment income) and the poor vs. the rich.

11. how about the "Johnstown Flood" tax?
The "Johnstown Flood" Tax
Many of you have probably heard of the 1889 Johnstown Flood, one of the worst natural disasters in United States history. What you may not know, however, is that another great flood hit Johnstown in March 1936, a flood that is still taxing Pennsylvania alcohol sales.

Originally created to channel emergency relief funds to victims of the Johnstown Flood, a 10 percent temporary tax that was placed on the sale of all alcohol in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It was only supposed to last a few years to raise the $41 million necessary to rebuild the community - an effort that was achieved by the end of 1942. Nearly 70 years later, that tax is still in place and now stands at 18 percent (not including the statewide 6% sales tax).

The near $200 million collected annually no longer goes to flood victims, however, instead going into the general fund for lawmakers to use as they see fit. A temporary tax that has overstayed its welcome.

12. Wine tax.
Wine's good for you and should be drunk (drank?) at nearly every meal.

...but to do so would acknowlege inflation exists. So don't hold your breath.

14. Yes, and same for the estate tax
The lack of indexing for inflation makes both of them regressive in the long run.

16. Taxes paid by people making less than $25,000 per year
All taxes should be eliminated that are paid by people earning 25K or so. Maybe 20K...

17. We are supposed to be able to claim on this year's
taxes the amount of federal tax on telephone bills
used to pay for the Spanish American war.

We will be allowed to claim 2003 - 06 taxes only.

I don't know if this law has passed or not.
