CapitalNews is really beginning to become a hard news site. Where else would you see a pole about pulling out? Most news organizations are too focused on only one thing, explosions in Lebanon and Israel.

I don't think we can pull out soon enough. If wait to late to pull out, well there will be consequences. I can't believe some people call it cutting and running. Who cuts and runs? No really, who cut and ran? I seem to remember Nixon doing the same thing and it wasn't cutting or running, though it smelled fishy (like most things in that administration. Let's not even touch that.)

that is actually how the word pole came about. They used to put a notch in the end of a wooden pole to score. Now they just do it over the telephone or the internet and use computers to score.

Sorry, I couldn't vote "yes" to the poll. Actually didn't wanna touch it with a ten foot pole, on account of it had no option for "Yes, pull out the troops, but let's begin right now."

Start now. Tomorrow they might be deployed to Iran or God knows where.

53. K&R, as this is the funniest thread I've read all year.
I'd consider spoiling the fun and quoting from a dictionary or two.
But I doubt they'd be believed.

Well, no harm in trying, I guess ...

poll, noun.
1. The casting and registering of votes in an election.
2. The number of votes cast or recorded.
3. The place where votes are cast and registered. Often used in the plural with the.
4. A survey of the public or of a sample of public opinion to acquire information.
5. The head, especially the top of the head where hair grows.
6. The blunt or broad end of a tool such as a hammer or ax.

verb. polled, poll·ing, polls, verb transitive.
1. To receive (a given number of votes).
2. To receive or record the votes of: polling a jury.
3. To cast (a vote or ballot).
4. To question in a survey; canvass.
5. To cut off or trim (hair, horns, or wool, for example); clip.
6. To trim or cut off the hair, wool, branches, or horns of: polled the sheep; polled the trees.

(from the Middle English pol, head)
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/poll

To explain, polling means counting heads.
It does not mean, and never has meant, cutting notches in a stick.
