Democrats voting for the Iraq War who are no longer with us...
In celebration of the fact that Lieberman could be leaving soon, I've made a list of Democrats who voted for the Iraq War who have moved on. Only 21 Democrats, 1 Republican, and 1 Independent initially voted against it.

One curiosity, from my hobby of following Southern politics: The Southern Democrats who voted for the Iraq War lost. Southern Democrats who opposed the war, on the other hand, (like Graham or Byrd) saw no significant decrease in their popularity, and Byrd is even running again. Northern Democrats were not affected either way...those who voted for the war are still there, except Daschle (for other reasons) and maybe Liberman soon.

On with the list:

John Breaux (D-LA)
Jean Carnahan (D-MO)
Max Cleland (D-GA)
Tom Daschle (D-SD)
John Edwards (D-NC)
Fritz Hollings (D-SC)
Zell Miller (D-GA)

1. I may misunderstand you...but only two southerners on that list lost...
Breaux, Edwards, Hollings, and Miller did not run for re-election.

BTW: Miller is not a Democrat...no matter what he calls himself

4. I respect the work that Edwards has done lately...
As for Miller, he had no support whatsoever if he were to run for reelection. The Georgia Democratic Party even made anti-Zell ads while he was still in office. He was forced out.

2. Why would that be?
Southerners are more peace-loving? Survival in a red state demands strong ideals, even if you are on the left? Southerners demand consistency of moral systems?

3. Or, Democrats opposed the Iraq war and these guys took them for granted...
So, option 2: "Survival in a red state demands strong ideals, even if you are on the left"

These states weren't red before Bush.

5. Actually, from what I've seen, Bush has driven a lot of states back to
Blue.

6. No one voted for the war.
Edited on Tue Aug-01-06 02:14 PM by bowens43
There was not a vote on whether or not to go to war. It was entirely the administration's decision. The vote that did take place was not required for the administration to start the war. The war was going to happen with or without this vote. This vote was an attempt to slow down the march to war by requiring certain actions to take place before the military option was exercised . The administration ignored these requirements.

7. Read the resolution - there were no requirements placed on
Bush. The Resolution simply told him that all those who voted for it, supported whatever decision he made...

8. Zell Miller is not a Democrat.
Any more than Bob McMahon, mayor of Media PA and funder of Swift Liars, is a Democrat. I'm not sure why either of them is allowed to have the "D" after their name.

And, NOBODY "voted for the war." That is a talking point of both the right wing and the democrat-hating faction of the left wing.
