African American Capital Police: "McKinney Targeted By White Officers"
VIDEO: African American Capitol Police Officers Say Rep. McKinney Targeted By White Officers...
GNN Tv | August 1, 2006

The Last Plantation

Capitol Hill Police Officers Speak Out!

By now, you’ve probably heard about the March 29th run in between Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney and a Capitol Hill police officer. But you probably have not yet heard this side of the story. In true GNN fashion, we go beyond the superficial coverage of the mainstream press to uncover a different perspective on the story. GNN’s Ian Inaba, director of the new documentary American Blackout talked to four police officers about allegations of racism on Capitol Hill and the now infamous incident.

4. That was interesting. Informative. Thanks for posting the link.
I hadn't known about the letter McKinney sent, in re the General Counsel's termination, and how suggestive that is wrt his decision to prosecute her.

this rings true. I was there when the Democrats were in control. God only knows what it's like with fascists such as Frist, Hastert and Trent Lott running the place. Recommended.

8. Interesting.
So the McKinney incident was part of a pattern of questioning and confronting black congressmen and women but not the white ones. But the corporate media managed to spin it as a "bitchy" women throwing her weight around. I've always admired the congresswoman and thought there was more to it. She was at a protest and she seemed very genuine to me. She didn't hold herself above everyone else (unlike Lieberman). I just couldn't come to grips with the Congresswoman who joined in with protesters and the one who got on her high horse because she wasn't immediately recognized. I knew there was more to it.

She recognized the pattern of racism but the corporate media as usual didn't.

23. If it's a pattern including ALL black representatives, why didn't they ALL
support McKinney's accusations?

The members of the Black Caucus aren't exactly shy.

9. Member of Congress, Cynthia McKinney had written a letter
on behalf of the black Capitol Hill police to John Caulfield, General Counsel of the United States Capitol Police Board, demanding his resignation.

How long have the Republican/Neo-cons basically been in charge now? 10-12,14 years?
At least the past 6 years for sure.

Given what we've seen of Gonzales,Ashcroft,Kerik etc., it's not a stretch at all to believe that components of the Capitol Hill police have complete loyalty to bushco.

27. Do you mean you don't think racism was a factor?
Edited on Tue Aug-01-06 02:57 PM by tblue37
Because that is what you are saying, since "truthiness" means deception that has the appearance of truth. "Truthiness" = NOT true.

If you are using "truthiness" because you think the Black police officers are lying and you support the other version (that McKinney was throwing her weight around), then you are using it correctly. But if you are subsituting "truthiness" for "truth," you have it backwards. "Truthiness" = lies pretending to be truth.

For some reason no one seems able to get that straight.

29. Racism seems the major factor
Edited on Tue Aug-01-06 03:07 PM by Generic Other
I meant to say the black officers tell the side of the story the MSM and others conveniently ignored. It explains exactly why McKinney was targetted. It's disgraceful and should be addressed as publicly as the original incident, don't you think?

Sorry, I didn't make myself very clear. I guess I misused the word truthiness. Better stick to stuff I can actually find in the dictionary. :)

32. Help me spread the word, please.
It isn't just you. Nearly everyone is misusing it on DU and on other progressive sites. Colebrt came up with the word as a way of indicating what sort of fake "truth" the other side is satsified with and uses to sell its crap to Americans, who don't pay close attention to politics anyway.

Basically, it's a cuter way of saying "pseudo-truth," which also isn't a real word, but which captures the sense he is after.

28. Not sure which ones you found appaling but the one
saying "Blacks commit more crime and that's why they are in jail" really was an arrogant Freeper type post I wouldn't have expected at Huff Post.

I liked the comment by one poster who pointed our that Dems themselves have treated Cynthia unfairly and mention Kos posters. As much as I agree with Josh Marshall and love his site, he's alluded to thinking the Dem party would be well rid of McKinney.

Any of us here who've watched the Lying Dirty tactics of the Repugs Rove machine have known that McKinney has been targeted since she said Bush was responsible for "9/11." She was tagged as "conspiracy theorist, loony" and they put up someone to run against her.

Every day another crooked Repug is exposed in Congress or State/local Govt and on Wall St. Repug Congressmen get away with saying the most vile things on the Senate and House floor and they never are treated to a witch hunt like McKinney is.

Go Cynthia! I hope this energizes Democratic Georgians to get out and vote for her.

AND by "conservative" forces within the Democratic Party.

The Democratic Party is a BIG TENT, but there is NO ROOM for those
who advance the agenda of THE RICH (Corporate Owners) at the EXPENSE of LABOR and the POOR.

30. ...
Senators and Representatives . . . shall in all cases except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their attendance at the Sessions of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same;

The origins of this provision stemmed from fears that Members of Congress might be arrested or detained in order to prevent them from casting a specific vote, or out of sheer harassment by their enemies.

Freedom from "arrest" has been interpreted to mean also from detention or delay during an attempt at civil law enforcement. One jurist wrote that a Member of Congress should be given the maximum leeway in protection from routine law enforcement efforts because "a Member has superior duties to perform in another place." The argument went on to cite that when a Member is detained, the people he/she represents lose their voice in debate and in votes cast.

http://www.c-span.org/questions/week145.asp

------------------------------------------------------

It's ironic that the Capitol police have found a workaround of the above with their checkpoints. They knew from the beginning that they didn't have a chance of bringing charges that could stick. The whole thing was a swiftboat type op from the beginning.

I've said the charges would never stick since the threads in March. They can't make them stick against a SUPERIOR. The charges were never the real goal.

And so many DU'er jumped right in and joined the swifties, still do, even to this day. Even after the charges have been dropped and no censure was ever brought. Pathetic.

Michael Ruppert supports McKinney, too:

THE BELOVED CYNTHIA McKINNEY

A White Ex Cop Speaks Out About a Georgia Congresswoman

by
Michael C. Ruppert

~snip~
The virulent, spit-dripping, white, racist commentators from Boortz to DeLay and the oh-so-PC and dainty black Democratic pundits, columnists and pols who pick Cynthia McKinney apart—pretending to defend her while putting her black butt on the E-Bay auction block for November—are actually allies. They both want her to go away. They both want the issues that have come too close to public recognition in this case to go away. Leaders from left and right, black or white, cannot bear the thought of actually looking deeper at what happened with Cynthia McKinney and what it means

~snip~
I have walked the halls of Congress with Cynthia McKinney maybe eight to ten times. I have walked into and out of the Cannon and Longworth house office buildings with her. I have walked to hearings in the Rayburn house office building with her. I have walked the underground tunnels from one of those office buildings directly to the edge of the House floor and its anteroom with her. I can tell you one thing for certain because I have seen it and I have felt it. Cynthia McKinney and her staff get treated differently from just about anyone else on the Hill. It’s subtle, but so is the taste of dirt when it’s in your mouth.

I have reposted this link a few times now, but I think that it is an important read for those who believe that racism does not play a role in how Cynthia is treated on the Hill.
