I don't know how i feel about the M.E. conflict
Edited on Tue Aug-01-06 12:45 AM by tinfoil tiaras
Okay, I know this is a very contentious subject for all DUers, but I'm gonna try to tackle it anyway.

I don't know how i feel. I'm in the middle on all of this. I hate that Israel is bombing all this stuff in Lebanon and all these innocent Lebanese people are getting killed, but I don't like it when the Hezbullah terrorists bomb Israel and kill innocent Israelis. I just want all of them to come to some sort of agreement and stop bombing each other and whatnot. I don't wanna be branded an anti-semite for thinking that it's bad that Israel is killing the Lebanese, but I don't wanna be branded as a pro-Israeli dupe for thinking that it's bad for Hezbullah to attack and kill Israelis. :( :( All of this is so sad...which is why I never really get into it....:(

I just hope for peace in my lifetime.

1. Its the identities which are screwing us all...
jewish, christian, muslim. Most people feel just like you do, if we could get over these group identities and be individuals I think we could realize it.

2. You do know how you feel...
It's just tough to express with all that's going back and forth over such a sensitive issue. You want peace.

Just like most sane normal human beings.

Like you, I hope real peace does come, but the cynic in me says it will only be a lull between wars.

3. It sounds like you sympathize
with both sides. You have humanity left in you and haven't fallen into a trap of hatred.

You're not anti-Semitic or Anti-Arab, or anti anything. You sound like you're pro peace...Keep working for it. It feels like a thankless task, and yes it is idealistic, but we can only hope that one day disputes will be solved using less destructive means.

4. Hezbullah kidnapped two Israeli soldiers
You think that crime deserves what Israel has done to innocent Lebanese? Last count, 59 Israelis dead, 560 Lebanese dead.

Twenty three % of Lebanon's duly elected democratic government were Hezbulla. You want to overturn a democracy?

6. With all due respect, the OP did not say any of those things
She is merely stating that she doesn't know how to respond to many of the issues posed, including the ones that you stated in the form of rhetorical questions.

11. Problem with that list ....
Edited on Tue Aug-01-06 02:21 AM by Trajan
It seems a tad one sided ...... dontcha think ? ...

It fails to register ANY attacks by Israelis against anyone or anyplace at anytime; and yet we KNOW such a list exists .....

It also fails to recognize those moments when Arab and Jew live in peace and dont attack ANYONE ....

Killing is WRONG ... it is FUCKING WRONG .... I am tired of these weak apologies for the sake of killing innocents ....

There is NO ONE supporting the 'right' of arabs to kill innocent israelis .... and yet you would promote such a ghastly policy towards Lebanese civilians because Hezbollah 'was bad' ? ...

This is such nonsense .... such bullshit .....

Killing IS WRONG ...... damnit .... It is just as wrong for Israelis as it is for anyone else ....

13. Well, it also fails to show that Israel occupied Lebanon from 1982-2000
Many of the dates in that list fall within the dates of the occupation. I think that is an important distinction to make. Isn't it to be expected that the occupier will experience resistance, and suffer the consequences? (Not excusing any of the violence here -- on either side, just stating the obvious, which, too, gets ignored.)

Anyway, I share your sentiments and that is why I am struggling with this issue -- Killing IS WRONG ... and war is not a solution.

5. I was going to post the exact same thing
I think that everyone here does genuinely hope for peace, so there's no disagreement about that.

What seems to be happening is that most of DU has decided that they think that Israel's actions will ultimately help the goal of peace or will ultimately hurt the goal of peace. Honestly, I've thought about the subject extensively and I still don't have a damn clue whether Israel is right about this or not. One thing I do know, though, is that if we are going to achieve peace, Israel MUST come up with a better foreign policy than what it has now. Again, I'm not condemning or supporting their actions because as I said, I don't have a damn clue about whether they are right about it or not. But I know that there is a better solution to this problem that hasn't been found yet, and Israel must find that solution.

7. I think the problem with the debates people get into
through no fault of their own, is that they appear to have to choose sides. They are either on Israel's side or Hezbollah / Lebanon's side (I think those are 2 different sides!)

When in reality most people support the people on both sides. The real casualties in this action.

Just like not everyone in the US supports Bush, not everyone in Israel supports the military action by their leader and not everyone in Lebanon supports Hezbollah.

It's important to separate the people from the government. They aren't always linked.

I certainly don't always support every action my government takes.

8. I feel the same way
When you have a conflict thousands of years old, as this one is at its core, its pointless to determine right and wrong. Both sides have been wronged at different points, both sides have killed innocent people.

The only way to end this conflict is to have the two sides understand each other. That hasn't happened yet, but its the only shot. Theres no possible way to remove Muslims from the area since there are hundreds of millions of them around, and if Israel were destroyed they'd unleash their nuclear arsenal and quite possibly end humanity.

Don't worry about picking sides. Just be against killers of any ethnicity, religion, or motivation.

9. Philosophy and rhetoric is fine
But the fact remains that the Lebanese are taking over a 10 to 1 hit over Israelis. That has to figure in somewhere.
