Is Judaism the only religion it's not okay to bash?
I wouldn't bash any religion - I think they all have merit and they all have flaws. But it does seem that, here on DU, bashing Christianity is welcomed for the most part without anyone batting an eye. And in this country as a whole, the same is true for Islam. But anytime anyone says anything even remotely anti-Jewish, it's like the sky is falling. I sort of doubt that had Mel Gibson made similar comments about Christians starting all the wars, etc., it would have gotten the same reaction here.

No need to get into a flame war here. I'm asking a genuine question from the objective point of view of an agnostic.

Could it be that we still have so much pity/guilt/remorse about the Holocaust????

1. The Christians here do NOT suffer bashing quietly (nor should they).
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 08:58 PM by Redstone
Make an anti-Christian post, and you'll find out right away.

No, DU is NOT rife with Christian-bashing. Pay attention, and you'll see.

Mel Gibson aside, is there any other religion whose members are routinely killed just for being that religion, and have been so for thousands of years?

Got any Jewish friends? Ask them.

2. I don't "bash" religions
I bash fanatics and zealots who want to bring their particular religious beliefs into the governement, whether they happen to be Jewish, Muslim, Catholic, or Christian Fundamentalists.

In the US, it's mostly Christian Fundamentalists.

3. Because being Jewish is more than a religion
It's also viewed as sort of an ethnicity. Many anti-semites view Jews as a different race. I'm thinking that's the view Mr. Gibson was operating from when he made those comments.

6. That second part of your statement is one of the silliest things I've ever
read. Gee, when they all die off, can we forget about the Holocaust?

9. Hell, why wait?
Seems some have no issue with "bashing" and even re-writing history while they are still alive.

but I sure do on this one. This is disgusting in more ways than just revealing simple ignorance.

17. The death all WWII Veterans
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 09:32 PM by Lost-in-FL
would not erased their sacrifice. I don't see why the death of Jewish survivors would make people forget The Holocaust.

But yes, I do agree certain religious are a little bit "on your face" about even the slightest criticism. They feel "special".

14. Religion should be respected
... even if we disagree with its outlook.

I detest bigoted Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson and their racist warmongering stupidity. But this should not be viewed as a reflection of the church adherents as many have been deluded by those hate filled crazies.

15. Why should religion be respected?
when the christians don't practice 'thou shall not kill'. All these European christians have been killing each other and the rest of the planet for millenia in the name of religion. And the other religions are just as bad. Why should I respect global superstition? I need real reasons.

If you are not willing to respect their beliefs, why should they respect yours?

5. Because it is also an ethnicity. Even atheist jews get attacked.
I had my house spraypainted when I was a kid with racial slurs. I'm an atheist and so are my parents. But my father is Jewish.
