Colbert Report
Very intelligent man, loved what he did on Strangers with Candy. His satire Colbert Report is also equally as clever.

Honestly I dont think a majority of people understand all of his satire which strikes me as pretty odd. I have heard him a few times make fun of his own audiance for completely missing a specific point. Many of the guests who seem to always kiss his ass also completely miss it at times, saying Colbert's trite (but badass!) words like "truthiness" in a way that is completely out of context.

This is the only problem I have, and it really isnt a problem but something I want to understand. His show preaches to the choir. It caters to a libertine demographic like people who post on this blog. It seems to me that his satire is not the kind to wake his opponents up. It really is more of a kind of distain, a hatred I guess. I hear him on this, but it only does so much. I guess in some way I just dont find this political sham that we call America funny anymore. It isnt funny, in fact it is like reading something verging on the insane, like a Harlan Ellison short. It seems that satire is a bit out of place, and actions now are necessary. I dont think we really have any time for laughter.

those are big words, I have troubles just rousing myself to amek some sort of change. But I just wanted to spill my guts on these matters because they were on my mind. I also want to get input from you guys.

Cheers: Titus

1. There's a need for satire in times like these.
It's a time-honored response to tragic situations. There was nothing funny about the Great Hunger in Ireland, but Jonathan Swift published "A Modest Proposal" just the same. Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying.

3. I have heard that most comedy comes from real pain. I know that might not
help, but I think people have a choice you can either laugh about your particular situation or you can spend countless hours crying.

just turn that dial. his demographic is an intelligent, liberal viewer. if you can't deal with subtlety that's your prob.

BTW, what do you mean by "libertine".

8. calm down!
err I did not mean I disliked it, try not to prejudge others so quickly adriennui, I was asking an honest question. I swear, some of you guys here at this blog are just as pushy as the pushy conservative debate team kids. I love the show and admire the satire. I also remember him saying a few times that there could be more constructive things to do than to watch his show. This is all I am saying.

To you other guys, thanks. :) It really is a load off to bitch about the political state of affairs, so in a way you can get that with the Colbert Report.

6. I respect your opinion but disagree. I think the people who watch
The Colbert Report fully gets his humor and laughs even harder at the neocons who don't. You will notice that the liberals that appear on his show can dish it right back at him while the repugs give him that deer in headlights stare.

Neocons may not know what satire is, hell, half of them can't spell it but progressives can laugh their asses off at the repug "cluelessness." It is like code talking during World War II - we get the message without the enemy being able to decipher. Least that's my 2¢.

25. um no, that's not what 'truthiness" means
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 08:09 PM by Ms. Clio
From the American Dialect Society: "truthiness refers to the quality of preferring concepts or facts one wishes to be true, rather than concepts or facts known to be true. As Stephen Colbert put it, “I don’t trust books. They’re all fact, no heart.”

11. setting the record straight
I laugh at jokes. indeed I actually understand them as well. I watch the colbert report every night, one of the only television shows I actually watch. I laugh my ass off every time. I just figured some of you would see me as a peer and start on equal footing. Indeed though your blog has just as many assholes in it as any other out there online.

You cant escape from assholes! this is a good axium if I ever heard one!

15. You might want to familiarize yourself w/DU rules:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/rules.html

3. Civility: Treat other members with respect. Do not post personal attacks against other members of this discussion forum.

4. Content: Do not post messages that are inflammatory, extreme, divisive, incoherent, or otherwise inappropriate. Do not engage in anti-social, disruptive, or trolling behavior. Do not post broad-brush, bigoted statements. The moderators and administrators work very hard to enforce some minimal standards regarding what content is appropriate. But please remember that this is a large and diverse community that includes a broad range of opinion. People who are easily offended, or who are not accustomed to having their opinions (including deeply personal convictions) challenged may not feel entirely comfortable here. A thick skin is necessary to participate on this or any other discussion forum.

I dont think I my level of disrespect is any higher than others who have posted here. I will stop posting on this thread though. All I ask is not to prejudge. If I say I dislike the show, then you can say that the show is great and and make a rebuttal against it. If I misspell, dont point it out! I will figure it out and the embarrassment will come naturally! Dont put words in my mouth. It is one of those little things in life that really infuriates me. okay Ill drop it all, but from now on I am asking you guys to be a bit more mature.

I just said libertine because the word carries with it the idea of free thought. I figure that the term "liberal" these days is used in such a dualistic way that it is hard to use the term without referring to your political affiliation. hope this makes sense.

38. "Libertine" carries the connotation
of licentious sexual behavior. At least that's my immediate association. Don't worry, I'm not actually engaging in it, much as I wish I were. :(

lib·er·tine (lĭb'ər-tēn')
n.
One who acts without moral restraint; a dissolute person.
One who defies established religious precepts; a freethinker.
adj.
Morally unrestrained; dissolute.

most people probably thought of the more perjorative definition, but you are exactly right:

ib·er·tine
n.

1. One who acts without moral restraint; a dissolute person.
2. One who defies established religious precepts; a freethinker.

Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 09:41 PM by haruka3_2000
then use the spellcheck. Then, you can see if it's all about the spelling in your posts or if the "attacks" are actually about your posts. I suspect it's the latter, personally. Also, you need to grow a thicker skin, if you're going to stick around. We've all recieved "attacks" here and those who can handle it, stick around. Survival of the fittest.

Since this is blogging, you have to be careful how you word things. I learned early. Let it roll off. This is a place where at the end of the day, its the only place you feel like you can breathe. Colbert, while extremely funny, is also very, very sad because the situations are actual events.

I understand what you are saying about Colbert wondering why we all watch and aren't doing. Well, late night isn't the time for rallies. Also, many of us do a lot each and everyday to keep this country going... so we ard doing.
