Mel Gibson is crying in his $300 million anti-semetic fortune
I read the articles speculating about his career being over and I'm thinking, who are they kidding? This is the same fundy guy that self-financed Passion of the Christ. He can self-finance and make whatever movie he wants outside of the studio system. And his bigot fundy fans will flock to him. I wonder if this was a publicity stunt ala Hugh Grant to give him street cred with the racists, i mean his "base" of fans.

1. But...
He has to rely on a distributor, even as he produces his own work. Disney is supposed to distribute "Apocalypto", but they could drop him. Lions Gate is the most likely to pick up a dropped Disney film, but are they willing to sustain a potential boycott or backlash?

And he had a tentative deal with Disney/ABC for an ABC miniseries about the Holocaust, which is now stalled.

It may be true his career will survive this, and he certainly won't be scraping the dumpster for food... but in a town where you are only as good as your last film, he sure shot himself in the foot, as it was in his mouth.

2. i figure the only stunt here is him checking into rehab

3. Mel is toast.
There may be caviar on it, but it's still toast. The film industry will go out of its way now to thwart his every move. And brother he knows it...

5. Given that many of the movers and shakers in Hollywood are Jewish....
I'd say yeah. Mel may find a hard time finding work unless he makes it himself.

6. Hard to believe,
but it's amazing how quickly a 300 million dollar fortune can go splat! with one self-financed mega-flop. Studios have shareholders to please so they're less likely to work with a self-outed anti-semite and risk a public backlash. Distributors have to make back their money (as well as keep their reputations in tact so as to attract other hopefully good films to make money on), so they may be less likely to jump on the Mel Gibson Nazi Train and turn off more intelligent, less bigoted filmmakers. So, it's not as simple as having a lot of money. What good does it do you if you're a pariah and no one returns your phone calls and you no longer get good scripts or interest as a Director or ... the list goes on and on. Best he lie low for a long while.

8. Schwarzenegger declares Hitler his hero and gets the CA governorship.
Gibson may get his own studio, at least.
