Is Syria next? What is the US master plan?
3/10/2004
The media in Israel have been informed of the US government's intention to attack Syria next. The Jerusalem Post reported yesterday: "US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and the civilian echelons of the Pentagon have proposed that President George Bush instigate military actions against Syria". The same Jewish newspaper, which has good connections with the USA, reports: "several Pentagon officials' belief that Syria should be the next to go after Iraq." The first phase of the war on Syria will be a series of small strikes over a long period, designed to disable Syria's defences without provoking too much public opposition at home in the US. The allies used the same strategy in neighbouring Iraq. The excuses for the war on Syria will also be the same - WMD and terrorism.

The U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld is considering provoking a military confrontation with Syria by striking Hezbollah bases near the Syrian border in Lebanon, London-based Jane's Intelligence Digest reports. In an article to be published this week, the journal states that multi-faceted U.S. attacks, which would be conducted within the framework of the global "war on terror", would most likely focus on Hezbollah bases in the Bekaa Valley of eastern Lebanon. It's noted that the deployment of U.S. special forces in the Bekaa Valley would be highly inflammatory and would "almost certainly involve a confrontation with Syrian troops."

11/28/2005
A Syrian man said he was bribed by Rafiq al-Hariri’s son to provide false evidence against Syria to the UN panel investigating the assassination of the former Lebanese premier, Reuters reported. Hosam Taher Hosam, who identified himself as a former Syrian intelligence officer, said an elaborate scheme of torture, threats and bribery had forced him to testify against Syrian and Lebanese officials. He said that Sa’ad Hariri met him several months ago and offered him $1.3m to provide false evidence against top Syrian officials. Hossam also said that an interim report by chief UN investigator Detlev Mehlis to the UN Security Council implicating senior Syrian and Lebanese officials in Hariri’s killing was mainly based on his false allegations.

2/14/2006
Syria decided to switch all of its foreign currency transactions from dollars to euros amid a political confrontation with the United States, the Director General of the Commercial Bank of Syria said on Monday, according to Reuters. Dureid Dargham said the decision was a precautionary measure as the U.S.‘s threats against Syria would complicate the banking procedures and disrupts cash flow into the country from corresponding banks in Europe.
"This is a precaution. We are talking about billions of dollars," Duraid Durgham said in a press conference. The state-owned bank still dominates the Syrian market although the government allowed the establishment of private banks in the past few years. According to Reuters, the bank also decided to stop all dealing with dollars in the international foreign exchange flows of private clients.

According to a statement released by the U.S. State Department, Bush’s admin will allocate $US5 million to finance the Syrian opposition. The Syrian grant program follows an announcement of a similar initiative for the Iranian opposition. The State Department said the money will be used in accelerating the work of what it described as “reformers in Syria.” The money would come from the department's Middle East Partnership Initiative, announced in 2002 to promote reforms in the Middle East and North Africa, it said. The grants "will build up Syrian civil society and support organizations promoting democratic practices such as the rule of law; government accountability; access to independent sources of information; freedom of association and speech; and free, fair and competitive elections," the statement claimed.

Israeli warplanes flew low over the Syrian presidential palace on Wednesday, an operation denounced by Syrian state TV as an “aggressive act and an unacceptable provocation”, AFP reported. Israeli army officials said warplanes buzzed President Bashar Al Assad’s summer residence in the Mediterranean coastal city of Latakia. A report by Israel’s Channel 10 television said that the operation provided "a way for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to prove the long arm of the Israeli army.” Syrian state TV reported that national air defenses fired on Israeli jets and forced them to flee.
The TV report said two Israeli planes flew "at a low altitude" near Syria's Mediterranean coast around dawn on Wednesday, without mentioning the overflight over Assad's residence.
