Prepare for Saint McCain to acheive Deity status as we approach 2008
Edited on Sat Jul-29-06 02:39 PM by Stevendsmith
He'll run on a platform that only he can keep us safe from terror. The media will step up their gushing praise, and a gigantic swath of self-professed "moderate" Democrats will buy into it AND VOTE FOR ANOTHER REPUBLICAN IN 2008.

Okay, cue all the people who think McCain doesn't have a shot in hell because he's too old and the fundies hate him.

1. a few days ago
McCain, or someone on his behalf, bought an ad here on DU. I thought it was pretty funny that he would run an ad here.

2. I saw it today! I loathe the man.
Jon Stewart is so easily charmed by him, too. I groan when he makes an appearance on The Daily Show. He takes over a bit.

4. I just kills me that so many "mainstream " dems
buy into the fantasy McCain. His unflagging support for Bush doesn't even register with them. It is baffling and infuriating.

22. While damning, that picture is not a magic talisman against McCain.
People will rationalize that moment. "Oh, he had to support Bush... blah, blah."

3. On the one hand he wasn't a 'Chickenhawk'
which may be why the neocons hate him.
On the other there is this from the freerepublic.com

6. I suspect that this won't happen because of the divide on Iraq
As things get worse in the overall middle east, McCain will have a major millstone around his neck. When he ran in 2000, he honestly ran on the course Cheney/Bush wanted to take. He spoke of regime change in (I believe) 5 or 6 countries. Even now, he is against Bush on Iraq - only because he thinks more troops should be sent in. I don't think this will attract many Democrats.

I do agree he has a chance and I don't rule him out on age.

7. I wouldn't characterize him a "against Bush on Iraq."
Edited on Sat Jul-29-06 03:14 PM by Stevendsmith
But you're right, of course: he wants more troops in Iraq! Jeezus!

What's even more amazing is that "moderates" will sign on, because they like and trust McCain. And while Bush is a disaster, they agree, they'll gladly vote for a "good" Republican --like McCain.

Sickeness.

20. The question is will they if his Iraq (and region) policies
become known? (In my case I'm extra handicapped as I never found him likable.)

Senator Hothead or something similar was its title.

12. He'll also take on the "junk yard dog" persona.
No more yucking it up with Jon Stewart on the Daily Show. That was evident by his last appearance a week ago or so. He was very precise and made sure he didn't come down on Bush.

15. It will not happen because....
Number one reason...the man is just unlikable! He has a certain physical repulsiveness to him..a puffy ugliness about him. His voice has a sort of sick old lady whininess to it...there is just nothing about him that is presidential at all. People cannot relate to him on that level. And then there is that integrity problem...and no one will ever forget his lack of just backbone when bush and company attacked his mental health, his family and his child...and he did nothing..and then later kiss assed the same folk that attacked him, his wife and his family. people dont like that in a person.

21. If he gets the nomination, he is almost unbeatable -
"Independents" love him, as do deluded Democrats. And it looks to me like he is gonna have Rove at his side to smear and destroy the democrats.

18. My sense of McCain is
First, that he is a lurking danger, he could become the next neocon figurehead, and if the Republicans are not totally discredited he could be elected President.

Second, that it is proper and appropriate for us to be attacking him, but, when we attack him it is very important that we be polite, factually accurate, and evenhanded. Otherwise our attacks on him could easily backfire.
