July 4, 2004

(CNN) -- The former military commander of Abu Ghraib prison has claimed to have met an Israeli interrogator who was working at a secret facility in Iraq.

Although Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski told the BBC in an interview that no Israelis were working at Abu Ghraib, she claimed that she met an Israeli interrogator at an undisclosed facility while she was escorting a retiring four-star general through Iraq last year.

"He was clearly from the Middle East and he said, 'well I do some of the interrogation here, and of course, I speak Arabic but I'm not an Arab, I'm from Israel," Karpinski said Saturday in an interview with the Today program on BBC Radio 4. snip

"He did look like he was an Israeli. At that time he didn't elaborate any more than to say that ... he was working with them and there was people from lots of different places that were involved in the operation," Karpinski said.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Bureau issued a statement "emphatically denying" her information, saying that there was "no basis whatsoever to the reports."

1. I believe that Karpinski could sink a number of ships. She was made to
take the fall for Abu Ghraib where she had little to no control of the abuse that was happening there.

11. karpinski is embarrassing
she feeds into some people's notions that women shouldn't be in the military.

4. But there was talk of Israelis advising us on interrogation
techniques and how to deal with insurgents. I do believe there was photos of men believed to be Israelis in Abu Ghraib.

5. But that doesn't resolve the ambiguity.
Were there people with dual citizenship with Israeli military training there as American military folk, were they "consultants" hired to give advice, or were they there in their capacity as active duty Israeli military.

There's a big difference between them. People will latch onto the third option, and say that the government was involved, as it must have been if that was the case, and people won't remember the words of the report, just what they understand them to mean: that the Israeli government itself ordered the torturers to go there.

If we go with the first or second case, it's possible that Israel's government was involved, but by no means would it be necessary to assume so.

6. I guess we need a whistle blower to confirm the existence
and status of any Israeli nationals in Iraq. I would be surprised if there was none in Iraq. The stakes are too high for Israel for there to be none working in Iraq.

7. I recall a photo of a guard from inside AG who had an Israeli-esque tattoo.
I can't recall the source, though, it's been a long while, and I think it was questionable.

9. That's why we need someone to step forward and tell the
truth, whatever it might be. Whether Israelis were there or not is not as important as finding the truth.
