2. "They took it all and didn't bat an eye."
Well, after all, God made Adam and Eve, not Steve. What's 20 years of commitment got to do with it, right, Republican fundies?

3. damn. That's just wrong.
I've actually talked to a lesbian (in a long term relationship) who believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman! Talk about brainwashed! I think I'll e-mail her this article. This is exactly why we need civil rights for ALL Americans! One of the reasons I love living in Massachusetts is because of the gay marrriage law. Now we have to make sure we can keep it. We also need more straight people who are willing to speak out against injustice (even if you think it doesn't affect you!). I love my "Straight, But Not Narrow" bumper sticker, and I've gotten a lot of positive comments from other straight people.

6. jerk cousins are even suing for "back rent"
for the years he lived on the ranch. Not enough to take the estate against the will of the deceased... now they want even MORE. Highlight to your friend that there are only a handful of states (I think the article said seven) that protect the interests (as in Will) of the deceased in the case of long-term same sex relationships.

4. I just can't believe this man's life was destroyed by a cousin who
probably didn't give a shit about Meadows when he was alive. It's a sick society we live in.

5. of course they don't care
about anything but the money- typical - our relationships don't count in many places - I fail to understand why middle-America-Fundie "straights" don't get it yet - we don't want SPECIAL rights - we want EQUAL rights (not bashing all middle america -just some of the ones I have met:mad: )

7. Which is why I get angered when moderate "dems" want to jettison
off gay rights/abortion rights/party platform all for the sake of being re elected. Only in America.

9. I've seen this happen so many times
I'm numb to it now. During the 80's and early 90's I lost, literally, hundreds of friends, many of them in long term relationships. Relatives who'd not spoken to the deceased in years descend like hordes of locusts, grabbing anything they could get their hands on and then hauling the grief stricken survivor into court for everything else. Louisiana's Napoleanic laws make it all too easy. My partner and I have very carefully constructed wills, but I'm still expecting trouble from his side of the family if he goes first. Some of his family is truly pathetic, including a brother who has 4 different wives/girlfriends with 16 children amongst them. No problem with his mother, on the other hand; I'm named in HER will.

12. This is why the sticker "Kansas: As Bigoted as you Think" is so popular
It really took off around the same time they started pushing for a marriage amendment.

And these assholes here passed it. A law limiting marriage and every benifit and protection that would come with marriage to heterosexual couples. Domestic Partnerships aren't even allowed.

Although, I was happy to see that my employer is now offering protection for domestic partnerships on life and health insurance.

13. The more I think about this, the less I understand
how in the world can the cousins sue for back rent?

Seriously!

How would such a case even work, at all?

16. Adding insult to injury. Making him "pay" for having the nerve to
fight them in court. Now that's just ugly.

I hope anyone else in this position will see a lawyer to make certain their legal papers are in orderand their ownership is air-tight.

I hope kharma bites the hateful greedy cousins on the ass.

17. Well, what I am saying is, how does it work, technically
how can they even sue him for back rent without any prior claim to the land or any agreement of any kind?

I don't even see how such a lawsuit would make it into a courtroom...

cousin didn't charge it.

15. The same thing happened to my sister's fiance, David.
They were to be married in February of 2002, but suddenly she was diagnosed with incurable kidney cancer. They had bought a house together, but it was in her name only. When she passed away, her three daughters took the house and all the furniture away from David.

24. I was at the hospital a while back, and the woman in front of me ...
Edited on Wed Jan-18-06 05:40 PM by Lisa
... was filling out forms on behalf of her partner, who has dementia. It was obvious that she knew everything about her (a whole list of medications and treatments) and was dedicated to providing the best care possible. I am so glad to be in a jurisdiction with same-sex marriage (British Columbia). How horrible it would be to be in an institution, with your partner not even allowed to visit because she wasn't officially your spouse!

I'm sorry that Mr. Beaumont has lost his partner -- this legal dispute is probably causing him a lot of pain and sorrow, on top of everything else.
