Al Jazeera airs tape of Jill Carroll, statement gives US 72 hours to free prisoners
(AP)

18 January 2006

CAIRO, Egypt - An Arab television channel aired a silent 20-second videotape on Tuesday night of hostage American reporter Jill Carroll and said an accompanying message gave the US 72 hours to free female prisoners in Iraq or the journalist would be killed.

Al Jazeera would not tell AP from whom it received the tape, but issued an a statement itself calling for Carroll’s release. A producer for the network said the tape was received on Tuesday.

The producer said no militant group’s name was attached to the message that was sent to the station with the tape.

3. So they can't reach some sort of compromise?
'There are certain (mostly innocent) female prisioners we will release in exchange for'....I dunno, just seems a reasonable thought.....g-d this whole mess just really s*cks (and all of these innocent folks/pawns have to suffer for it *shame*shame*)

4. The U.S. has around 14,000 prisoners in Iraq, most are innocent
There are 14,000 prisoners in U.S. custody in Iraq.

The Red Cross said 70% to 90% of the Iraqi prisoners in U.S. custody are INNOCENT.

The U.S. military admitted that the evidence against prisoners is justified in only one in four cases.

But the military is torturing these Iraqis everyday.

And the U.S. military is torturing Iraqis TO DEATH.

7. Yeah. So how many innocent women are being held
in Iraq for no fucking reason except that they are brown women and have no Carlyle connection to fly them to Kuwait?

8. I don't know...
This is not new, but I remember when I read about it...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5412316/site/newsweek/

From the article...

" Noor, a detainee whose full name is being withheld by NEWSWEEK, was forced to expose her breasts and genitalia and is shown in the MPs' pictures giving a forced smile for Graner, who sources believe was the photographer. Subsequently a letter signed by a woman named Noor circulated widely in Baghdad saying she had been raped and impregnated by American soldiers, and begging the resistance to "please kill all of us."

If there are any women prisoners, I have no doubt, given the Muslim attitude toward women, that they are serious about wanting any women detainees released. We have detained hundreds, maybe thousands, who are innocent. They have been tortured and sexually humiliated. Considering the attitudes toward women in Iraq, and even to some degree the United States, can there be any doubt that the Iraqis consider what is happening to women to be a huge outrage?

I hope and pray that Jill Carroll will be released unharmed. She, as are many of her sisters in Iraqi prisons, is innocent. The evil men who ordered this war, the guilty ones, remain free.

11. I heard today that we are admitting to holding 8 Iraqi women now
It was reported that the USA is going to release 6 of them because they are innocent. What becomes of the other 2 women I wonder? And why the hell were we holding 6 innocent Iraqi women for crying out loud?
