Just received a phone call from my mother. Dr. Stanley Biber, the well known sex-change doctor has passed away at age 82. He was a friend of mine, he was my next door neighbor, he was my family doctor. He was a brilliant surgeon who chose to live in a small rural town to live a quiet life and experience the small town atmosphere.
He gave willingly of his time and energies, and was a friend to many. He was not just a sex change doctor, but the doctor for the coal miners, the local surgeon, an accomplished weightlifter, and later a cowboy.
He was never pretentious, always down to earth, and always willing to shoot the breeze with you. In fact, if you went in for a cold, he spent five minutes diagnosing you, and another fifteen in his office chatting you up.
I am sure he will slandered by the religious right in days to come, but know that he was never judgemental or condescending nor pretentious. He was just a man doing his job which was helping people achieve their dreams or goals...whatever they may be.
God speed Doc
