WICHITA, Kan. — Two emaciated girls who told police they ate only when their father wasn't traveling on business were hospitalized after police found them in an advanced state of starvation.

"It's the worst case of malnutrition I've ever seen," said police Lt. E.J. Bastian. The 6- and 7-year-old girls were found Friday in a home's basement, were they were kept.

The girls' stepmother, whose biological children were found healthy and well-fed upstairs, was taken in for questioning. Their father, traveling on business, was to be questioned when he returned, police said.

State social workers discovered the girls after receiving a tip and checking on their welfare. They then called police.

The two girls told police they ate whenever their father was home, which wasn't a lot. With the father gone this week and next week, "they were really hoping they could eat this weekend," Bastian said.

15. My dad had a bad stepmother

She beat him and had him and his brother placed in a group home for a while (where Dad was quite happy.) But she wasn't THIS bad. This woman should be imprisoned and the inmates told why.

died. We had five in all and no one went hungry, unless you count food avoidance by the child itself. My husband was on travel 75% of the time, leaving me to care for his kids as well as mine from another marriage.

This kind of a story is as abhorrent to me as it is to all of you. Not all stepmothers are evil; and not every stepchild is an angel, either.

The abuse of the stepchildren is horrific -- but, the other children were abused as well -- put in a situation where their step siblings were being starved -- as though that could be some kind of normal thing to go on in the home -- what the hell. They will need counseling and need to be removed from this crazy bitch and her lackey of a husband -- they will already have a very warped idea of what is "normal" and acceptable behavior / home life.

So why are we hearing about this type of thing more and more???

Good grief, what a terrible story. At least the poor dears are alive. Heartbreaking -- to read that they were "hoping they could eat on the weekend."

17. We had a case like this a couple of years ago in New Jersey.

Foster parents were doing the same thing to sibling brothers in their care. The boys who were in their teens when discovered were the size of 6 and 7 year old children. They were also locked away in the basement and starved. The foster parents are serving time.

When I was growing up, there was a woman in our church who was raising her nephew along with her own children because his mother's boyfriend insisted that he be thrown out of the house (at age 12). At least he was lucky enough to have a loving aunt and uncle to take him in.

Evidently, some women feel so worthless without a man that they'll allow the abuse or neglect of their own children rather than give their boyfriend or husband the boot.

I've heard of at least one male counterpart. One of the street kids I knew was a 16-year-old girl who was allowed home only when her father's girfriend was out of town. Otherwise, she was on the street. What kind of father lets his teen-age daughter live on the streets when he has a perfectly good place to live himself?

Apparently the same kind who lets his wife starve his daughters. :grr:
