Counter-meme: Republicans started WW3
As you've probably heard, many Republicans have decided that the strategy to hold on to seats in the next election was to convince the American public that we are in the middle of World War 3, and use all the usual fear tactics they excell in.

You know? It just might work.

Already, various protofascists... err... "Republicans" have been making the rounds on the usual news shows and repeating the phrase "World War 3" as often as possible.

I think we need to insert a counter-meme to combat this. The obvious thing to do is to point out who got us into this mess. During the run-up to the Iraq war, Republicans promised sweets and candy and swooning Iraqis in the streets, followed closely by an explosion of stability that would break out all over the Middle East. At the same time, Democrats/liberals predicted that this foolish war in Iraq would inflame the entire region.

Guess who turned out to be right?

That is what we need to remind people of. Please get used to using the phrase "Republicans started World War 3," or better still, "Republicans promised stability on the Middle East and instead gave us World War 3."

Obviously, conservatives will try to counter this by saying "We didn't start WW3, Osama started WW3, or have you forgotten?" At this point, we can respond one of two ways: point out the stark contrast between what they promised and what actually happened, or use that opportunity to turn the conversation to Osama and the fact that despite all their promises, he's still on the loose and Republicans have failed miserably to do anything about him.

1. I like it. Trying to start WWIII just to stay in power.
That's how insane they are.

2. Let's see, House voted 410-8 to support Israel. Let's pin in on the
Republicans. That'll work.

Then you have Hillary Clinton, Joseph Leibermann, John Kerry, now was that the 1st time, 2nd time, or 3rd time, Charles Schumer, etc., etc.

I'm afraid I don't follow the thread from my post to your response. They seem unconnected.

6. If World War III started with Iraq and Afghanistan, then you have some
Democrat Senators to thank for supporting the intial actions. They will be included with the warmongers. If World War III started with Israel and Lebanon, then you have some Democrat House members to thank for supporting that action by Israel. They will be included with the warmongers.

We get blamed for believing that WMDs were in Iraq, even though we supposedly didn't have access to the same intelligence. The Republicans go back 15 years to remind us that we were duped along with them. No amount of denial can change anybody's mind, since we are tarred with the same brush.

Well, we are tarred with the same brush again with this House vote. No amount of protest during the midst of World War III will change the fact that we supported the war, action, retaliation, or whatever you want to call it, in July 2006.

7. Well, following your reasoning...
...then we should just lay down and die when Republicans start scaring the public with their "World War 3" talk.

Look, I'm as disappointed as you are with DINO chickenhawks, but that's no reason to let the Republican WW3 talk go uncountered. Just because some dipshit psuedodemocrats voted for these idiotic things does not change the fact that many liberals predicted chaos would result from the Iraq action, and that's exactly what happened.

conclusion about who started World War III?

I remember the Viet Nam War, and it is generally conceded that the Gulf of Tonkin resolution was responsible for widening that war, in effect, sealing our commitment.

I have seen the Cold War referred to as World War III, and the War on Terror referred to as World War IV. Someone on TV today said that we had been at war with radical Islam since 1979(the Iranian takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran). So according to this logic, we have been at war for over 25 years, and didn't realize it. You do know that Carter was President in 1979. So this fellow was blaming the Democrats for starting World War IV.

Edited to add Gulf of Tonkin Resolution reference.

When the Republicans start scaring the public about WW3, we should just roll over and die. Sorry for suggesting something.
