Why does the media show the destruction and rubble in Beirut but...?
Edited on Fri Jul-21-06 10:40 AM by kentuck
...not in Haifa? I hear reports from Haifa. In fact, reporters are on the ground in Haifa. They report that 11 more rockets fell on Haifa last night with 19 injured but they show no pictures. Why pictures of rubble from Beirut but none from Haifa?

on edit: Just asking. Are they trying to make the Israelis look like the bad guy??

6. Of course the damage isn't comparable.
They showed where a rocket had hit a building; the windows were blown out but no injuries. It's certainly not anything like what they've shown from Lebanon, which is much more devastating and extensive.

....there are pictures of Haifa.....what there is to show....Beirut is in shambles...so they show shambles. Haifa has comparatively little damage, so they show comparatively little damage...........

4. EXCUSE ME????
I've seen quite a bit of both on news sites.

However, since the destruction in Lebanon is much more severe and dramatic, that is where most footage is shot.

Civilian populations in both countries are suffering because gangs of belligerent men on both sides are acting like spoiled brats.

28. See the post below. The source cited is US News.
Not every report will note the restrictions imposed. You may have to read reports to find it. In this case, the restriction certainly is understandable. I suppose the Israeli military also watches every report out of Lebanon for useful information.

32. OK, now see this post
people who dare to videotape Israeli soldiers in occupied areas usually get the living crap beaten out of them. Many journalists have been simply shot. This is in addition to the restrictions Israel imposes. So no, it's really not understandable.

23. And in Britain, those restrictions has been reported
They specifically said they weren't allowed to show some footage on TV from Israel, because the IDF said it would help Hizbollah. And they've been detaining Al Jazeera journalists:

Attempting to deny Hezbollah any information useful for better aiming at targets, Israeli authorities have instructed the media not to identify the exact locations where the Katyusha rockets fall.
...
Israeli police have detained crews of the Qatari-owned network four times in the last two days, taking them three times to a police station and holding them for a few hours. "Then they apologize and let us go," said Al-Jazeera's bureau chief, Walid al-Omary. "They didn't ask anything, they didn't take any equipment. Nothing."

On one occasion, the Al-Jazeera crew members were filming at a point in Haifa where many TV networks line up with their cameras, including the Associated Press, Reuters, Fox News, and the Israeli channels. "The police walked over to us, asked us who we were and told us we had to go with them," al-Omary told me. Another couple of hours at the police station followed. (Al-Jazeera's crew members are all Palestinian citizens of Israel with the exception of one, a Jerusalemite, who carries an Israeli ID.)

It didn't get better. On Tuesday night, al-Omary was taken alone to the police station for six hours of questioning, he said. "They said there were claims that our broadcasts are helping Hezbollah," he said. "That's ridiculous. My work doesn't help Hezbollah. What about the Israeli stations that even name the address of the house ? I want them to tell me, what are we broadcasting which is different from the others?" Al-Omary asserted that his network is being harassed for its coverage and because "it's easy to bother the Arabs."

13. A matter of proportion
Israel said it dropped 23 TONS of bombs on just one target this week... Hezbollah's headquarters. Or was it a mosque? It's anybody's guess how many more tons have been dropped on other targets in Lebanon.

But it's safe to guess that Hezbollah's rockets have dropped only a tiny fraction of that on Israel.

Without getting into any discussion about who has the high ground here, I think it's safe to assume that there's a lot more "photogenic" destruction in Beirut's southern "suburbs" than can be found anywhere in Israel.

The vicious attacks from the evil witches of Hexbollah have totally destroyed the infrastructure of Haifa and made the entire city more dangerous than Baghdad. That's why Tucker Carlson is attempting to broadcast from there, at great personal danger, brave man that he is. After all, just venturing out on the balcony of the Haifa Hyatt puts his very life in jeopardy. (That's why he has a glass full of tonic water on ice with a slice of lime handy at his side - it's therapeutic.) It's impossible to reach the areas of the city of Haifa where the corpses are buried in rubble.

Beirut, on the other hand, has made a theme park of sections of the city demolished for urban renewal purposes, thanks to the generosity of people around the world. The Lebanese government runs the equivalent of Universal Studio tours around the city. Those shrewd Lebanese sure know how to use the media, don't they?

18. I saw some footage from Haifa a couple of nights ago
An apartment building had been hit (I think this was on ABC). It looked like three stories, probably 4-6 apartments per story. One corner had been caved in by the rocket, obliterating one apartment and damaging a couple of others. Fortunately, there was only one minor casualty, an older retired woman who was away from the impact in her kitchen.

I don't know if there is a discrepancy in the coverage, but from what I could see of the Haifa rocket explosion, whatever Hezbollah is shooting into Israel is far smaller than what Israel is shooting into Lebanon. I saw some of the pictures from Beirut, and the destruction was of a much greater magnitude and scale than the Haifa destruction.

21. I saw some...The damage just wasn't that impressive.
Not by media standards anyway. I saw a reporter running with a group to check the damge of a rocket that had just hit and it basically put a small dent in the ground and mangled someone's drainage.
Not that I'm saying it's any less signifcant, it's just that you see the damage in Lebanon and well...That's some friggin damage! Israel could level Lebanon in a week if they like.

were fired into Israel before Israel "kidnapped" the doctor and son and then Hesbollah "kidnapped" the two Israeli soldiers? I was not following it closely but I am under the impression that rockets were falling on Israel for some time and women and children were being killed? Am I correct?

I usually like your posts, but this is bizarre. You think the damage in Haifa from 11 Katusha rockets and no dead is comparable to the huge destruction and death in a great city like Beirut? You think there is some equivalence there?

They aren't trying to make Israel look like the bad guy, Israel is doing that all by itself.

35. I heard that up to 500,000 had to flee their homes in Lebanon
What is the total in Israel?

I could not imagine living in either of these places, where grown human beings think nothing of tossing large explosive devices at each other to see who can do the most damage.

People spend their lives building things, planting things, making things, raising children, and then their entire lives are vanished in a split second because of an argument between people they don't even know.

Humans are intensely stupid, short-sighted, ridiculous creatures.
