8. Yep, rocket fuel and nuclear materials too
And sometimes, they don't plan the route well. Years ago when BIG ones were being decommissioned and removed from silos, a flatbed truck carrying one of those huge mothers (the sort designed to hit places across oceans ;) ) got stuck under a bridge on freeway in Phoenix...

Quite the traffic jam. Freeway runs below street level through there. Folks were trapped in a concrete canyon until some clever chap suggested letting the air out of the flatbed's tires which gave enough wiggle room to get the DOD rocket out from under the busy urban bridge.

Am hoping that thing was unarmed and had the fuel removed before the got it stuck under a bridge in a large population center.

Then again, I never liked Phoenix much, and my mother-in-law lived there at the time...

14. Unarmed, they said.
Fortunately, it did not sprout legs and disappear into the Bronx with the rest of the illegal firearms to be found there.

Worst case scenario: the cops pick it up and plant it on some unsuspecting homey just released from State Pen. In presenting the case to the grand jury for possible indictment, the grand jurors are told, in all seriousness, that the cop saw the weapon in the guy's pocket, after which time the guy voluntarily confessed ...

9. On its way up the Cross Bronx to the CT State Thruway to New London NB

Naval Submarine Base New London
Groton CT

On the east bank of the Thames River near Groton, CT, New London Naval Submarine Base was the birthplace of the submarine force. It was originally a Navy yard, converted to a submarine base in 1916, and greatly expanded in World War II. The advent of nuclear power required an improvement in training and support facilities. By 1959, New London had become the largest submarine base in the world with 8,210 active personnel. In 1969, the base also took on logistical and training responsibilities for fleet ballistic missile submarines. In 1974, the Naval Submarine Support Activity was established. By 1979, the base supported the new Los Angeles and Ohio class submarines. Major units included Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair, and Naval Submarine Support Facility. The base was recommended for closure by the DoD in the 2005 BRAC Recommendations (see BRAC 2005 below for details).

16. That information is classified.
Edited on Fri Jul-21-06 10:55 AM by leveymg
They don't think you have a need to know that, or anything related to your own safety. Your security clearance authorizes you to the following inquiries:

* Who won American Idol last night?
* What is the name of the blonde kidnapped in Aruba?
* Where is the nearest Pizza Hut?

That is all.

17. Happens all the time. If the accident had not occurred,
no one would have had any idea. This is a non-story. Transportation of hazardous and questionable material occurs all the time and all over this country.

I was a commercial driver for 20 years and have seen some pretty interesting things. Several times i have seen VERY non-descript, plainly painted tractor trailer rigs with no license plates driving along and stealthily followed by dark blue or black suburbans or Crown Vics with hard to detect red and blue lights behind the grill or mounted high in the windshield and rear windows. These types of convoys happen all the time with no fanfare and no public knowledge. They don't typically cross mandatory truck scales either. I heard a story about one such convoy that was pulled over by a State Trooper. The Trooper pulled the Semi over and right behind his cruiser, 2 Suburbans and a Crown Vic pull up. The officer draws his gun only to find 10 federal agents get out with assault rifles pointed at HIM! Apparently when the Troopers co-workers found him, he was cuffed in the back seat of his own cruiser.

22. It is probably a "Curtain-Side" trailer

The one on top is a hard side, the bottom is a curtain side.
The sides are removable to facilitate the loading and unloading of large and/or bulky cargo. There are "Rag Top" trailers as well.
