Israeli-Arab men look at the pitted road after a missile
fired by Hezbollah slammed into the street in the
northern city of Nazareth. In the narrow streets of
Nazareth's Muslim district, two children became
the first Arab Israelis to be killed by Hezbollah's
hail of rockets on northern Israel.(AFP/Yoav Lemmer)

That hole's not big enough to plant a ficus tree..

2. Picture of one of these "rockets".

They don't look to me like much more than oversize firecrackers. Does anybody know how many people have actually been killed by these things? Granted, it is incredibly stupid to be provoking Israel by firing these things, but for the most part, they look more like an annoyance than much of a genuine threat.

5. In The Recent Days, Ma'am
The toll is about thirty dead, and about four times as meany injured.

They are considerably more than fire-crackers: the shorter range models are about equivalent to a five inch artillery shell. They travel a good deal more slowly than an artillery round, and so do not imbed themselves into the ground in the interval it takes the contact fuse to work.

6. Thanks for the info Sir.
That still seems like an extremely small kill ratio for the numbers of these rockets that are being launched. I'm wondering what the fatality numbers were like prior to the outbreak of major hostilities.

I think the launching of these things at Israel has been an incredibly stupid move. I'm just not certain that the response has been either proportionate, or likely to be effective in improving Israeli security, or addressing the underlying issues leading to conflict.

7. Prior To This Major Wave, Ma'am
The number killed was no more than a handful over six years of sporadic shelling: exact recollection fails me but it would surprise me very much if it were more than five. It amounted to a harrasment campaign: galling, because a state is supposed to do something about military actions against its citizens, but hard to respond to because each incident was so minor. The cumulative effect, though, does become wearing, and eventually a government pretty much has to do something if it can.

It is possible the Israeli action may achieve the goal of neutralizing this capability, but it is by no means certain it will. Success will certainly require Israeli soldiers entering southern Lebanon, and combing the place thoroughly for caches. It cannot be done from solely at a distance by aircraft and long-range artillery: the Israeli claims of the proportion of materiel they have destroyed to date strike me as grossly optimistic.
