WASHINGTON - The House failed Wednesday to override
President Bush's veto of a bill to lift his restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. That means the veto stands, killing the measure.

The vote was 235-193 to override, 50 votes short of the two-thirds majority required to send the question to the Senate.

Bush said the bill crossed a moral line "between science and ethics that can only do damage to both." Supporters of the bill said it would have allowed research only on embryos conceived during a fertility process that would otherwise have been discarded.

3. That was by design.
The Rs who stood a chance to lose on this issue had a chance to vote for stem cell research without it actually becoming policy. They planned this all along. It is a freaking game they play with votes and it is killing people. They've done this crap time and time again on issues that really affect people at a basic level.

4. Surprise, surprise....
Now they get to tell the fundies how they "defended" morality. :puke:

IIRC, that vote count sounds virtually identical to the first vote that passed it.

11. Yes, but, what have the polls showed the population thinks about
this issue! That 33% base, is not enough to win elections, and I think that there are more and more seats (House and Senate) coming into play.

I also believe the Republican base is having conflicts on so many issues that the group they kissed up to on this issue, has conflicts with other issues. It should be a very interesting mid-term, because the Repub's are really fragmenting and the non-Fox Repub's are getting an earful from the "true fiscal conservative" Repub's..

15. Harkin has a nephew with a spinal cord injury.
Said bush* is not our "moral Ayatollah".
He also said we are 95% rat (speaking of DNA). "And not just us politicians".

This is just so sad.

8. Good news is, most of the Repukes are old and will get sick soon...
Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 06:26 PM by IanDB1
and, since they don't believe in birth control, they probably have lots of children, and some of them will get sick, too.

Fuck them all.

And that includes Arlen Specter, who helped bring this madness down upon himself.

He's so glad to side with the Repukes until it's something like this that effects himself directly.

Fuck Spooky Arlen.

13. Well damn! I'm not surprised, but I am disappointed.
Well, I hope they'll be happy when they go home and the majority of their constituents let them know how unhappy they are with their failure to override the veto. Man, I have never in my life seen so many people with their heads up their asses at the same time.

14. It didn't surprise us either, but it sure is heartbreaking ..
There are SO many people who could be helped. So many holding out hope. My MIL has Alzheimer's, my stepson has cystic fibrosis. Diabetes runs in my family. If everyone looked deep into their family relations, I'm sure they would find one person that this is going to affect.

tis a sad thing indeed, all in the name of bush's morality.
