3000 billion tons of coal off Norway's coastline
By R.J.Wideroe & J.D.Sundberg

Fifty years from now, oil producing rigs could be setting coal on fire far below the sea, rather than pumping oil.

Burning coal where it is is one way Norwegian oil company Statoil thinks that the vast coal-reserves on the Norwegian shelf can be utilized.

This summer, students from Norwegian University of Science and Technology analyzed data from 600 wells drilled on the Norwegian Shelf of the North Sea. They calculated that there are 3000 billion tons of coal off the Norwegian coast. Most of the reserves are located at Haltenbanken. This compares to today's proven and recoverable world reserves of 900 billion tons of coal.

Inject oxygen

Geologists have known for a long time that there are vast amounts of coal in the North Sea. What we have done now, is to estimate how much there actually is, says energy adviser with Statoil New Energy, said Olav Kårstad.

"By injecting oxygen, we can ignite the coal where it is. This will produce a mix of gas which we can recover and use for energy-production. The problem however, is that one of the components of this gas mix will be the greenhouse gas CO2. We have to research a lot before we can utilize the resource in a way that doesn't harm the environment."

When can this be done? "Perhaps in a generation. It's impossible to say for sure at the time being", says Kårstad.

Statoil is currently evaluating what to do with the new knowledge.

1. What an ironic cycle
We burn coal and release CO2, heating the atmosphere and melting ice in the Northern Hemisphere.

The influx of cold, fresh water disrupts the thermohaline cycle, throwing many parts of the Northern Hemisphere into a deep freeze as the warmwater currents halt.

We have to burn even more coal just to stay warm and survive.

Rentech Tracking to Startup Coal-to-Liquids Pilot Plant in Q4 2006
7 December 2005
Rentech has ordered the gasifier and product upgrading units needed for the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) Coal-to-Liquids (CTL) Product Development Unit (PDU) it will be building at the Sand Creek facility in Commerce City, Colorado near Denver. (Earlier post.)

The PDU has been engineered to produce 10-15 barrels per day of FT diesel, naphtha and jet fuel through the Rentech CTL process technology.

A gasifier from BioConversion Technology, LLC capable of processing 25-35 tons per day of coal will provide the synthesis gas (a combination of hydrogen and carbon monoxide). Rentech will primarily process eastern and western coal at the facility with the capability to also process petroleum coke as well as biomass.

5. In your title you say 3 billion

but the text and article says 3000 billion - which is 3 trillion.

6. yes, that was wrong. It is 3 Trillion. Thanks.
An oversight. Sorry.

I'll try to change it if it's not too late to edit.

8. Well, they better hurry before Norway enters a new
Ice Age. There are reports that Europe right now is caught in a massive snow storm. They call it the "Little Siberia". People are freezing to death all over Europe.

The latest issue of Time Magazine has on its cover: "Europe freezing over?" It shows that the Gulf Stream is starting to slow down. Europe has been unusually warm because of this warming gulf stream. But due to global warming, the current is slowing down.

Scandinavia could be thrown into a new Ice Age because of it. If they want that coal, they'd better hurry.
