Dan Quayle walks out of Mellencamp concert over anti-Bush statement
San Jose Mercury News: HEARD THIS ONE?
Walking tall, and out

Dan Quayle took time out from participating in the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship in Stateline, Nev., on Friday to attend John Mellencamp's concert only to run into a political statement.

He then made a statement of his own by walking out during Mellencamp's rendition of "Walk Tall.'' Before launching into the song, Mellencamp told the Harveys casino crowd, in effect, that it was dedicated to everyone hurt by policies of the current Bush administration.

Quayle, who served as vice president for President Bush's father in 1989-93 walked out of the venue before Mellencamp finished the song.

Quayle said through a publicist: "Well, I think Mellencamp's performance was not very good to begin with, and the comment put it over the top.''...

3. Poor Dan Quayle. There's such a high risk of running into democracy
in action -- like the First Amendment for example -- almost anyplace he goes.

It must be tortuous to be dimwitted AND a fascist.

Oh Keerist...maybe Dan is getting his name back out there for a 2008 run. George will make him look like Abe Lincoln's reincarnation by comparison. :-(

just ask the Dixie Chicks

ask any number of other artists, actors, authors, professors, what's happened to their careers after daring to rock the boat.

remember Tim Robbins' experience with the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame? nothing is too insignificant to evade their discomfiture/retribution

Murphy Brown's BRAZEN immorality on that sitcom undid him some years back now, and add to that this ASSAULT ON LIBERTY by John Mellencamp.

38. Compare and contrast with Bobby Kennedy
Danny Boy is in an audience, at some distance from a stage, when an artist makes a comment critical of Bush policies, spoken deep from his heart. Then, here we go again, one of the Republicans who pride themselves on their strength and resolve and courage and staying power in face of adversity -- and he chickenshits out and walks out in a hissy fit.

I'm so old I remember Bobby Kennedy.

Bobby may have been born to privilege, but he developed a deep sense of connection to the pain and suffering and injustice that vulnerable Americans face in their daily lives. How?

There was an occasion, when he was invited to attend a meeting of black activists in NYC. There were very angry people there. They unloaded their rage about being victims of racism and injustice upon him. One young activist got into his face, and angrily told Bobby that just looking at him, a privileged white man, that he felt like vomiting.

Bobby just sat there, and took it all. Didn't say a word. Didn't flinch. Took it all in. Listened. Heard.

No hissy fit-- even in the face of intense rage. At the end of this encounter, he left silently and politely.

No -- he had the sense that this was an important education about the lives of Americans that he previously had no connection to. Perhaps the murder of Jack had opened him to the universal human quality of suffering, and anger....

He emerged a different man. This experience galvanized his resolve to fight injustice that vulnerable people live with every day.

Compare, and contrast with the cowardly behavior of Quayle.

Quayle doesn't have the courage or humanity to face any fellow American who has an opinion different than he. He has to flee from it cowardly, because he does not have a position that can adequately address and respond to those who have anger about America's present course -- in fact, he doesn't give a shit. He might as well stuck his fingers in his ears, and gone "Blublublublublu..." in the manner of a child who tries to refuse to listen to something unpleasant-- his behavior is on that level.

40 years on, and I am still mourning the death of Bobby.

To DU youngsters -- I wish you could have known Bobby....

106. DONE!!
I revised it for a non-DU readership, and sent it to Mercury News.

Edited version:
Compare and contrast with Bobby Kennedy

Dan Quayle sat in a friendly homeland audience, at some distance from a stage, when an American artist, John Mellencamp, made a comment critical of Bush policies. In one of the more recent cases of deja vu, yet again we see one of the Republicans who pride themselves on their strength, resolve, courage and staying power in face of adversity chicken out and storm off in a hissy fit.

I'm so old I remember Bobby Kennedy.

Bobby may have been born to privilege, like Mr Quayle, but he developed a deep sense of connection to the pain and suffering and injustice that vulnerable Americans face in their daily lives. How?

There was an occasion when he was invited to attend a meeting of black activists in NYC. There were very angry people there. They unloaded their rage upon him about being victims of racism and injustice. One young activist actually got in his face, and angrily told Bobby that just looking at him, a privileged white man, that he felt like vomiting.

Bobby just sat there, and took it all. Didn't say a word. Didn't flinch. Listened. Heard. No hissy fit or sudden departure -- even in the face of intense rage. At the end of this encounter, he left silently and politely.

Why? Because he had the sense that this evening was an important education for him about the lives of Americans that he previously had no knowledge of or connection to. Perhaps the murder of his brother Jack had opened him to the universal human qualities of suffering and anger, which he came to recognize in other Americans.

He emerged a different man. This experience galvanized his resolve to fight injustice that vulnerable people live with every day.

Compare, and contrast with the behavior of Quayle during the event Mercury News documented.

Quayle doesn't have the courage or humanity to face any fellow American who has an opinion different than he. He has to flee from it cowardly, because he does not have a position that can adequately address and respond to those who have anger about America's present course. He might as well stuck his fingers in his ears, and gone "Blublublublublu..." in the manner of a child who tries to refuse to listen to something he finds unpleasant. Or perhaps he doesn't care a bit.

40 years on, and I am still mourning the death of Bobby.

A message to American youngsters -- I wish you could have known Bobby...."

Thanks for the encouragement, my dear.

48. I have Danny Boy's autograph.
My sister saw him once at some stupid golf event and told him I was a big fan.

Another time, I was at a book launch event in DC and he walked by. Several of us just burst out laughing as he appeared. Right in his face. He looked startled.

66. I used to love the old Saturday Night LIve joke that
they passed along one weekend during the Reign of Bush the First

"The Secret Service has been given instructions that if anything is to happen to President Bush (senior) that they are to immediately turn their weapons on Dan Quayle.."

Quayle is a genius and diplomat compared to Dick Cheney's (the organ grinder) monkey in the White House now.

he would LOVE one of Ted's concerts....all he does is BLOVIATE through the entire thing.

Last time I saw his ass was 1982 BTW, he was already spouting his importance to the world, and his guitar playing was turning to shit (NOT that is was any great thing before, compared to real talent, however, one cannot ignore Stranglehold in the scheme of teenage pot smoking hazy reminiscing memories for those of a certain age)

He's a politician, and he's dumber than a box of rocks. He's still smarter than Bush, but not by much, not that it means much when you're at the 3rd Grade level.

Humphrey was able to get the Dem nomination, Mondale got the Dem nomination, Bush I got the GOP nomination, Gore got the dem nomination and won the election...poor Danny Quayle is the only VP in recent memory who not only couldn't get the nomination of his party when he ran for president but couldn't even win a primary election! the guy was and is still a joke.
