Walmart is trying to create consumer demand for building new superstores
Edited on Sun Jul-16-06 08:47 AM by no_hypocrisy
in my region.

I live in northwest Bergen County, New Jersey. The nearest Walmart is maybe 15 miles away. That's not close enough for Walmart. I think they'd like a Walmart five miles apart from one another.

In my "junk mail" yesterday, I found for the first time a Walmart flyer with all these "great values". And one could imagine a Walmart-wannabe-consumer thinking, "Hmmm. Where's the nearest Walmart? What?! I have to drive that far? Wow. Next time I hear about Walmart wanting to overcome the town's Master Plan and demand a huge variance, I think I'll demand my right to have a Walmart five minutes away from my house."

And thus, by offering flyers for a presently nonexistent local Walmart, the corporation influences voters and taxpayers to put pressure on their government officials to let Walmart build and build and build sometime in the future.

1. Walmart wants to open another store here in Omaha on 72nd Street.
There's a campaign to stop it and a national organization that helping. The following is their mission statement:

<snip>

Until Wal-Mart changes and becomes a responsible and moral employer, we will continue to let the American people know the truth about the high economic, moral, and social cost we pay for Wal-Mart's prices. Together, people are more powerful than corporate special interests.

<snip>

They have a website called http://www.wakeupwalmart.com/

It's a national website.

2. I am within decent driving distance of NINE Wal-Marts.
I won't shop there. Honestly, it is sickening how they have taken over.

The other grocery stores in this area are fighting back, though. Some have consolidated to get better discounts. Others are offering special super discount days. One grocery chain is giving gasoline discounts according to how much you spend on other purchases.

I honestly cannot stand walking into a Wal-Mart. The sad thing is, other people love them.

3. Ah, Wal Mart...
Theres like 3 where I live. And probably many more all over the state. When I'm in Ocean Springs that's where I have to hang out, because there's nothing else really to do. It does kinda creep me out, though. The fact that it has EVERYTHING...geez. But it is fun to go Wal Mart scavenger hunting (i.e. find the ugliest shoes possible in the whole entire store). Target is better, because they have WAY cuter clothes.
