Yes, I know I stated the obvious but go with me here.
Wheter it be interstate databases or federal databases, the federal government has information on our driving history (NLETS/NDR), criminal history (NLETS/NCIC), employment (SSA/IRS), education (National Student Clearinghouse), finances (credit bureaus). And I did not even include the terrorism databases such as Secure Flight and data mining in SWIFT.
Knowing this, why hasn't the incumbent president used these resources to his advantage in campaigning against the challenger? For that matter, all police officers have access to the NLETS and NCIC data. So why don't we hear about local sheriffs using this information against their challengers?
It just seems so easy to dig up dirt on your opponent if you're in power that I wonder why it hasn't been done that much. I mean George Bush's DWI came out only right before the election and his military records issue wasn't answered in 2000 at all. Even Senator Kerry's military record wasn't leaked in 2004.
Maybe I'm just way too cynical. :)
