Complaints in the office!
I just got a visit from HR about a Lie and Die bumpersticker that I had sitting on my desk for a few hours last week. It was given to me by a co-worker and I had it out to remember to take it home. Someone wrote an ANONYMOUS letter to HR to complain, citing that they "knew" people in Iraq and had taken offense.

I wasn't going to put it on my car, but now I am! The person that gave it to me, is going to put his on his car as well.

I have an idea of who complained, and if something else is said, I am going after his racist, secure borders bumper sticker.

Sorry, I just needed to rant this morning. And by the way, this person would have had to step into my cube to see the sticker, it was not visible to the outside.

1. Watch out, since you can be fired for having that on your car
if it's parked at work.

Probably even if it's not parked at work...

2. Ah...
...there was a time this was the "land of the free".

What has happened to the USA?

3. How did the complainer know what it was referring to?
Unless there was a specific reference to Iraq, "lie and Die" could refer to any number of things that are non-political.

The truth hurts or a guilty consciencve maybe?

4. A suggestion or two:
First, I would keep any and all documentation regarding the complaint; it might come in handy in case you suffer any employment problems in the future. Paper trail and all, you know... ;)

Next, if it were me, I'd go find some nice cubicle artwork, mousepad, calendar, etc. from one of the nice Liberal, Lefty, Progressive, etc. stores at Cafe Press. My friend had a DarwinFish coffee cup that annoys the fundies where he works.

www.cafepress.com

I get so many good bumperstickers there, even a few that prompt SUV-driving southerners to tell me I'm #1.

8. Thanks I will
It came from Cafe Press.

It was not yet on my car, but sitting on my desk next to my things to take home, so he came into my space to see it. I was not the only one listed in the complaint. Our next step is, if another complaint is brought up, then we are going to take the stand that all religious and political items have to go. The suspected complainer has numerous religious icons in his cube. And on his car.

My bumper stickers are all on magnets so they can be removed. His are not! Too bad for him...

11. If you're going to go that route make sure all your stickers are Christian
Stuff about peace, love thy neighbor, camel through the eye of a needle, "Jesus called. He says he wants his religion back," etc.

Try to out-Jeezuss the pro-war fundie.

And check-out the giftshop at http://www.LandoverBaptist.org

Again, this is only if you're not too attached to your job.

14. Taking our advice will probably get you fired.
I'm just warning you, that taking my advice is generally a bad idea in any situation.

With that said...

Have fun!

15. I am taking all advice with a grain of salt!
And since I was not the only one targeted in the Anonymous letter, I am not riding this wave alone. We have told the HR dept that if it gets to a problem, we would support a policy that requires ALL employees to remove possible offensive items from their work area. That includes listening to religious music and sermons without headphones.

13. My personal favorite....
...was one that said:

"Back in Jesus' day the Religious Right were called "Pharisees"."

I have a "christian" acquaintance who will not speak to me to this day because of that.

5. Devil's advocate....I've read and seen a few incidents where
images of Jesus /religious have been removed from cubicles (non-visible from the hall) simply because it can be a potential disruption to the workplace. The company owns the equipment, including your cubicle wall, and they have the right is dis-allow any and all non-work related items. (that was the view stated by HR, anyway)Not sure about stickers on cars in parking lot, depends on the disruption I guess. There was an incident a few months ago of a gentleman who worked for a company who also had his own part-time lawn service. He drove his lawncare vehicle to work at time to get a jump on his part time-clients after 5:00. His vehicle had a sign that said: "Emplowing only legal Americans".
He was told to change the sign's wording or refrain from driving to office.

6. Hilarious if not so sad
He knows people in Iraq and he's taking offense at the bumper sticker? And when those he knows come home in caskets will it all be your fault? No doubt he wants to stay bush's course, which is nothing more then the need for more Amreicans to get slaughtered in Iraq tomorrow so those who got slaughtered there yesterday will not have been slaughtered in vain. Shove the bumpersticker up his ass.

Secure border bumper sticker? So the yahoo is heading to Salinas Valley to pick lettuce?

7. First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the bumper stickers
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

9. :-)
I think I'll post that on my file cabinet.

You can't see it from the door, you would have to step in.

10. How badly do you really need your job?
If you don't mind getting fired, you could have a lot of fun.

Just put an anti-war bible reference on the sticker, and claim that you're being persecuted for being Christian-- and then get The Alliance Defense Fund to represent you.

If you like your job, then you might want to avoid escalating things INSIDE the office, and not put the sticker on your car.

Instead, on your own time (and not during a lunch break) you could put-up signs on telephone poles outside the office parking lot and along the roads leading to it.
