U.S. asks to exhume remains of Iraqi girl
By RYAN LENZ, Associated Press Writer

TIKRIT, Iraq - U.S. investigators have asked Iraqi authorities to help them navigate cultural sensitivities to exhume the body of a teenager allegedly raped and murdered with her family by American soldiers, a military official said Saturday.

U.S. Maj. Mark Wright said U.S. authorities are aware that Islamic tradition has strict rules governing exhumation and could require religious leaders to become involved in the investigation.

"You want to be aware of these cultural issues while at the same time making sure that the accused receives proper justice," Wright, a spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq, told The Associated Press.

Muslim tradition generally frowns on exhumations, considering them desecration of the remains.

5. Exactly
why her body was burned. Could they still get possible DNA to prove rape to tie a suspect? This isn't exactly like getting HER DNA from teeth, etc, on a charred or decomposed corpse.

2. Thank god they are calling her a teenager. A little bit of who she is
and what it means has been resurrected. Girl is a great description too.

3. Rape is a bigger cultural issue.
Article yesterday said that the remaining family (uncle, 2 boys, maybe others) might not allow this since rape carries such a stigma in Iraq.

4. The Iraqi government looks like a paper tiger
I'm sure they realize that the alleged crimes took place in Iraq, but the soldier is being tried here.

I understand the soldier was "US property" at the time, but I'm sure the Iraqi government would like to give the appearance that they're running their own country. It'll be interesting to see how we skirt the spiritual issues with Western justice.

Buxh has been in way over his head since "mission accomplished".
