This has really put me over the edge. I know that this administration has been spitting on the constitution and systematically taking away our rights. But this news today really brings me back to the summer of 1991 and a graduate level course I was taking.
I was a teacher then, and I took advantage of my time off from work in summer to take a graduate course simply titled "Hitler." It was being taught by a large man who was born and raised in Tennessee. He received his doctorate in European studies at Tulane, and had been working at the university where I was taking this course for around 20 years. Oh, and I have to mention that he was also Jewish.
It was a fascinating 5 weeks. Dr. Rudoff was outstanding. We read the various books assigned to us, and we were also given a list of books to independently read and report on. But the classroom discussions - God, they were riveting! There were about 15 of us in the class, and it seemed we touched on so many issues surrounding the affects of fascism on nations around the world (not just Germany).
I'll never forget the last day of the course. After we had finished our finals, Dr. Rudoff had final words for us. Yes, we had learned the general history of it all. But the most important thing, he stated, was to teach our children to think critically and question injustice. Dr. Rudoff said something to the effect, "Don't ever think it couldn't happen here. Hitler rose in a highly educated nation. It can happen here, and you need to be there to combat it if it rears its head here in our country." It was so moving - you could hear a pin drop. It was almost as if we were all having some sort of religious experience.
Dr. Rudoff has passed on. I'm thinking he passed before the Bush junta took power. After this little tidbit of news today, I wondered what Dr. Rudoff would say. I know that he would be pissed, and frightened.
This is the final straw, people. This is fascism at its finest. I really didn't think Dr. Rudoff's last words to us would ring true. He was a very wise man, indeed.
