Agree or Disagree: Democrats should go on offensive with the SC decision?
Edited on Fri Jun-30-06 12:43 PM by kentuck
Lets look at the political reality. Bush is accusing the Democratic Party of waving the "white flag of surrender". It is obvious to me that the Republican Party, including their President, are in full attack mode against the Democrats. Then yesterday we have a bombshell of a story.

George W Bush was breaking the law. Knowingly or unknowingly, it doesn't matter. He was breaking the laws of our Constitution and the Geneva Convention Rules that he swore to uphold also. He believed he had "unitary" and all-powerful authority as the President. The Supreme Court said "No!"

Considering the political attacks from Bush and the Republicans, shouldn't the Democrats use this issue against Bush and the Republicans - not just because it may be a strong political issue but because it is the right thing to do.

Democrats should point out that what the President was doing was "illegal" - in the words of the Supreme Court. Bottom line, that means he was breaking the law. They should ask the Republicans to censure him immediately, per the request of Senator Feingold. Democrats should go on the offensive with this issue. Is it about whether George Bush should find another way to obey law or should it be about holding him accountable. He has in effect been found guilty by the Supreme Court of the United States. In my opinion, the Democrats are shirking their duty if they do not hold this President accountable.

1. Dems on the "offensive"? That can be safely put on the "Fat Chance" shelf
One whisper of "Support Our Troops" or "Protecting America" by the Repugs and the valorous Dems will be hiding under their desks while voting for a "compromise".

6. Heck, a few have found their cojones
only to be roundly condemned by other Dems for displaying them, and in public no less!
Tsk tsk, can't be having that, now can we. Let's get back under that nice,
safe desk and stow the balls, got it everyone?

3. Democrats should go on the offensive against the radical faux Conservative
philosophy. The Reich wing favor the Illegal actions of their pet chimp. We liberals need to firmly tie the disgrace to the Reich Wing Nutz philosophy.

4. At a minimum Bush should be censured.
When we take back the House and Senate, impeachment should be the next step. Censuring Bush isn't enough. This guy needs to be brought down and his political career ended with impeachment. He deserves the maximum penalty for his corruption. He's a criminal. His administration is full of Nixonite sycophants, who've acted out their sick imperialistic fantasies. He's got to go.

9. The Democrats are being very cautious before the election...
They have seen the polls showing them far ahead and they don't want to do anything to upset that. The Repubs are letting it all hang out. They are slicing at the Democrats throats. Can the Democrats hang on to November with this strategy? Perhaps. But probably not...

5. Effete 'liberals' run from being called "offensive" ...
... unless it's in offending those more liberal.

7. This is just one example of their criminal activity
There are a score of other issues just as big. Censure is not enough. We should play this and the other illegal activities up until the mid term. Then we should impeach the whole lot of them.

8. The Dems appear unable to even agree what "on the offensive"
might mean. They should be at war with this Administration and the media jerks that support it. Get Gore and Kerry out of the country somewhere safe and have them, as the duly elected Commanders-in-Chief, order the military to stand down in Iraq and redeploy to the outskirts of D.C. in preparation for taking the city back from the chickenhawks, corporatists and holy rollers.

10. Things work differently, now that Republicans are in power
Break the law? No problem. We'll just change the law.

****
He (Bush) said the White House will work with lawmakers, with some senators seeing "a way forward with military tribunals in working with the United States Congress."

Senator Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee said Thursday afternoon that he would introduce legislation after the Fourth of July break that would authorize the military tribunals.
****

Mark my words - the Republican controlled Congress will just move forward with this, and totally ignore the fact that he broke the law. And they will shout to high heaven if any Dem tries to make an issue of this. They'll call it "partisan politics" during a time of war. :puke:

11. YES! Go on the offensive.
The more the American public can clearly see the differnece between the Democrats and the Republicans, the easier their choice will be.
