López Obrador, who has been in the USA only once and does not speak English, is the most critical of U.S. policies. He also has threatened not to honor Mexico's agreement to drop tariffs on U.S. corn and soybeans as stipulated by the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement, which he says has helped multinationals more than Mexicans.
"Clearly the U.S would be more comfortable with Calderón because he is going to be much more predictable and he also is more in tune with the U.S. model for the Mexican economy," says Pamela Starr of Eurasia Group, a consultancy in New York. But, she adds, Washington is "more than willing to work with Obrador."
