GOP planning a new floor stunt tomorrow attacking the media
Wednesday, June 28, 2006
From Mike Viqueira and Elizabeth Wilner

House Republicans plan to take to the floor tomorrow to excoriate the New York Times and other newspapers who recently reported on the government's monitoring of international financial transactions, part of the Bush Administration's approach to the war on terror. Republican members of no fewer than five House committees are currently drafting a "sense of the Congress" resolution, which will be non-binding but which will provide them with the opportunity to formally "condemn" both the reporting of what many on the Hill consider to be vital national security secrets, as well as the leakers themselves, according to a top House Republican speaking on background.

CNN’s Ed Henry reporting on GOP vs NYT. Don’t these people ever deviate from the script Mr. Rove sends ‘em? No mention at all of the public mentions/domain of SWIFT long before the NYT article. Where’s the context????

Bush himself told terrorists that banks would be monitored

from Bush remarks of September 24, 2001:

... We're putting banks and financial institutions around the world on notice, we will work with their governments, ask them to freeze or block terrorist's ability to access funds in foreign accounts. If they fail to help us by sharing information or freezing accounts, the Department of the Treasury now has the authority to freeze their bank's assets and transactions in the United States....

2. If they want to do stunts
why don't they involve rings of fire? I mean come on - I'd love to see a stunt involving Tom Delay and a Ring of Fire.

Edited on Wed Jun-28-06 01:44 PM by RagingInMiami
EDIT: This could backfire on them considering the media has been their greatest ally in selling "The War on Terror".

5. When did we elect Karl Rove?
I'm really getting tired of this jackass running our country! It's one thing for his boy to jump every time he says so...but the entire congress too?!

6. Thats great.
This will work for us in the long run. They may get a little boost from their base, but most Americans believe in a free press. Apparently the right would like to do away with our constitutional rights . Its all over them.

8. Why don't all 91,000 DUers write a non-binding resolution or 'sense of
intelligent Americans' that condemns the Republican Congress for wasting time, acting like fascists, and sh**ing on the Constitution. We should then deliver copies to every one of the House member's local offices.

10. And get ready for more....a LOT more.
They are trying to get every Democrat to vote on every wedge issue that they are going to use in their smear campaigns for November. Every Democrat's vote will be used against him/her in one way or another.

They have already voted on gay marriage and flag burning....now condemnation of truthful reporting....it WILL continue. Karen Hughes is probably the one behind the slogan "sense of Congress" resolution.

Oh, they are just beginning....be ready for more.

Democrats mantra:

FEWER slogans,... MORE solutions." (A catchy slogan is NOT a solution.) Keep saying it.

11. Oh, boy! I want to watch this debate. Gives the Dems a chance to
point out over and over and over again how the administration leaks like a sieve, and how often they leaked outright lies to get us into the war. How they purposefully leaked an undercover CIA operative's name to score political points.

None of the Dems should get into the actual food fight. Get into "good" leaks vs. "bad" leaks. And the hypocrisy of the right. I think it can work in our favor.

23. You are so right.
All these urgent issues that they must discuss immediately are just wedge issues to keep us divided and diverted from the real issues that are affecting us today.

The first Dem up should state: with all the things that are on the minds of the American public and you want to discuss the NY Times, when every one in the world knew we were tracking money, this is Bull and walk out with the rest of the Dems with them.

interesting to note they will vocalize in our house of government - The Capitol Building of The United States Of America - that they are against "Freedom Of The Press". This is a Norman Rockwell moment if I ever saw one.
