I never do this but (feeling a little like Cassandra) I'm cross-posting.

It isn't news that so many are dead or broken or bereaved. We already know that they live in fear and darkness and unbroken heat. We know about the flight of the middle class and the tent cities for ethnic refugees and the devolving of rights based on gender and the targeted destruction of educators. We even know that the traumatized children have no hope of solace.

But the report in today's LAT (linked above) reveals something more: The destruction of fundamental cultural mores - basic societal identifiers, agreements between strangers to care about one another -something that united what may never be united again.

This is tearing me up.

1. Our own culture has been torn asunder too.
Well, if it was ever a culture. Consuming isn't producing.

No, whatever happens will affect the entire world in the end. Here's why. For Bush to go around making big comments about Saddam being a deceiver, liar, torturer, et al... and then be the man behind the lies and deception, and who knows if he knew about the torture beforehand... the rest of the world will eventually HAVE to respond to the US.

US citizens will do nothing, that much is somewhat obvious.

Unless the stories of European governments being angry at us is a farce, in which case everything going on is just a show for their benefit.

I don't know what's happening and even connecting a bunch of dots together still reveals one unintelligible squiggle.

If there was more coherent structure afoot and honesty about what's going on, I'd be a lot happier. And far more likely to side accordingly. Who wouldn't? All we've seen are articles; each of which ends up contradicting another article which is saying something else. So who knows what to think. That is not the intent of anybody in power.

Like what?
Like writing to our Congresscritters? Too bad they're afraid to read our letters now.

Like taking to the streets, protesting Bush** everywhere he goes?

Like turning out by the millions to try to vote those bastards out?
