SCOTUS – Upholds Most Of TX Redistricting Case
Edited on Wed Jun-28-06 09:16 AM by kpete
per CNN 7:10 am pst

CNN: SCOTUS upholds most of TX redistricting case, overthrowing only the part that affected minority voting-rights in one district. Basically upheld partisan gerrymandering.

You can either ILLEGALLY Gerrymander or you can't.

The Dems were expecting this. They have plans to Gerrymander to pick up seats in Novemeber. Have at it Dems!

4. I agree - at this point, it's time to pull out all the stops.
I don't care if it does mean stooping to the GOP's level of playing dirty. We must take steps to take back our country from the Nazis that are in control. We cannot do it by legal means, they will change the laws, block us, and do everything (legal or otherwise) to undermine any efforts to remove them from power.

It's time to take off the boxing gloves and throw a knock out punch to these criminals!

GO DEMS!!

5. how in the world could we redistrict for THIS election?
But maybe we should do it, for next time. I actually backed Colorado when it decided not to do it (when Dems got control there) but the way I see it, the GOP will gerrymander us out of existence unless we do it too. If the country gets tired of having their congressional district lines redrawn every year or two, and/or the GOP loses some seats due to our redistricting, maybe we'll put a stop to it.

With a 98% reelection rate for congresscritters, we gotta look at another way to win this battle. Like at the local level.

8. All they need to do is draw a map, take it to their Dem state legislature,
get it passed and new lines are drawn.....just like Delay did. They probably don't have time now for the '06, but they will DEFINITELY be doing this for the '08 election. That's their plan.

18. that's what I meant, there is no time for 2006
I'm guessing all or at least most states have had primaries already. I thought you were saying we could do it for 2006.

An additional problem is several states have bi-partisan commissions that set the district boundries. In those states, they might not be able to get rid of the commissions.

I'm sort of torn as it seems Texas was gerrymandered in favor of dems prior to Delay's antics. How far was that?

6. More....
Court Nixes Part of Texas Political Map
Jun 28 10:14 AM US/Eastern

The Supreme Court on Wednesday threw out part of a Texas congressional map engineered by former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, saying some of the new boundaries failed to protect minority voting rights.

The fractured decision was a small victory for Democratic and minority groups who accused Republicans of an unconstitutional power grab in drawing boundaries that booted four Democratic incumbents out of office.

Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, writing for the majority, said Hispanics do not have a chance to elect a candidate of their choosing under the plan.

Republicans picked up six Texas congressional seats two years ago, and the court's ruling does not seriously threaten those gains. Lawmakers, however, will have to adjust boundary lines to address the court's concerns.

7. Even after how DeLay was shown to be involved?
It really doesn't surprise me. This SCOTUS is disgusting or shall I say several key members are.

9. Remember
I don't think anybody expected the court to throw it all out. Nobody on the court maybe even liked the thing. Who knows? But the court had to deal with the constitutionality of the deal and it looks like they found the minority voting rights portion unconstitutional.

They cleared the way for redistricting *ANY TIME
YOU FEEL LIKE IT* (and not just every ten years)
so if we actually managed to win a few Statehouse
elections, we could gerrymander them right back.

But we won't do that so it just means the Republicans will
instantly pull the Texas shit in every other state that
they control.
