This is a good one. It involves several republican state representatives. Oh, these crazy Cubans.
Before you read the article, let me give you some background on the players because it can get confusing.
Alex Villalobos: This guy is a very moderate republican. He believes in women's rights, civil rights, immigration rights, money for health and education, etc. So in other words, he is one of Jeb Bush's enemies. In fact, he was on his way to becoming Florida's first Cuban-American senate president before Bush's right-wing cronies pulled their support from him. The Florida Chamber of Commerce also withdrew its support for Villalobos.
Frank Bolanos: Speaking of Bush's cronies, this is the Cuban right-winger who is currently on the Miami-Dade School Board who played a huge role in getting the children's book on Cuba banned. Now with Bush's backing (currently unofficial, but we all know the truth), he is running against Villalobos. It's crucial that Villalobos wins this race because there are no democrats running.
Gus Barreiro: This guy is also on Jeb Bush's shit list because he was the one that made a big ruckus about that video that showed those North Florida boot camp guards beating that 14-year-old black boy to death. If you remember, a North Florida doctor had conducted an autopsy saying the boy had died of natural causes. The case was supposed to be closed and nobody was suppose to report on it, but Barreiro, who is Chairman of the State Juvenile Justice Committee, saw the video and was appalled. He called a press conference and wouldn't shut up about it until they were finally forced to release the video to the Miami Herald. The boy's body was exhumed and a second autopsy was conducted -- this time by a different doctor -- who indicated the boy died as a result of the beating. So this republican gets my respect because he refused to play along with the other republicans who would have preferred for him to keep quiet.
Ralph Arza:This guy is one of the most arrogant fuckers down here. He recently came under fire when he was accused of using a racial slur to refer to Miami-Dade School Superintendent Rudy Crew, who is black. Now Barreiro is accusing him of leaving him a cell phone message where he uses the same racial slur to describe Crew.
