Sounds absurd? Well, how much more absurd is it than making English the official language?

4. ¡Que ridículo!
Meine Familie sprach Deutsches, et Français, e Português, y español cuándo llegaron aquí, e muto mais. Eran de Russia, Afrika, Hollanda, Blearus... ad infinitum.

Eu quero portuguêses ser a língua oficial!

and of all who fought the Revolution as Americans to gain our soverniegty (sp?) and freedom.

28. Is it? We need to unify under one language. It must be English..
Im not saying theres anything wrong with Spanish, I'm just saying that English should hold precedent because we are in a predominately English speaking country.

32. why?
"unify?"

how would having an official language unify this country?

if anything, it would divide people more.

34. Youre misunderstanding the point here. We need to have at least a basis
of language. English is our common language. Things should be in English FIRST.

By unifying the country I mean presenting an image that the US is an ENGLISH speaking country.

25. We managed to get by for over 200 years without a "national language"
Besides, have you ever watched Univision or Telemundo? Believe me, there are a lot more Spanish-speaking Americans than you or I may realize.

I say we let capitalism take its natural course and let Spanish have its chance.

Let's see, there's Hawaiian in Hawaii, French and Creole in Louisana, for most of the southwest its Spanish, such as what the Californian Constitution is written in, or what Arizona considers an OFFICIAL language. You were saying?

35. those who insist on english as the national language should be able
to demonstrate the ability to read, write and speak it correctly, an ability that I notice is sadly lacking in the chimperor, for one, and quite a few of the "english only" or "english as a national language" bunch. as a matter of fact, I notice this lack in a good many people --it is appalling how many of the european-derivative native-born (we are NOT talking the First Nation peoples here, thank you, they have their own languages)demonstrate a complete lack of competence in their professed native tongue.

tell me, please, what on earth is so damned threatening about people speaking other languages? how many do YOU speak/read/write/comprehend? and WHY ARE YOU SCREAMING through so many of your posts? what deep, dark lack do you feel in yourself that you insist that everybody speak only one language?

9. since the day the white europeans invaded, you mean? you do remember
that this country was, in fact, inhabited when the invaders arrived? and, if I remember correctly, the vikings did NOT speak english (and they got here before the ones who landed at plymouth rock)

how about the many millions who came to this country whose native tongue was NOT english? why in the world are people so narrow-minded, so blinded by bigotry, that they have nothing else to do but insist on this petty, ignorant bs? when I was growing up, I heard many, many languages--including the four spoken in my own home. this is about the only industrialized country where one can be considered educated without the ability to speak several languages well --hell, half the native-borns cannot even speak english well (witness chimperor, for one)

what a time-wasting distraction from the serious issues that are not getting addressed while people emote over this divisive nonsense.

Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 08:53 PM by alarimer
New York was New Amsterdam first. My own ancestors spoke French when they arrived. And Norweigian, German, etc. And since some were Belgian, I imagine they might have spoken Flemish but I am not sure about that. So which language should I speak?

I demand that Flemish be the offical language!

26. I have a simple idea that will work perfectly
Why not simply poll every American citizen and ask what language they speak most frequently, we will pick whatever language recieves the most votes as our offical language. Certainly no racism in that? simple pure democracy, isn't that the system here everyone loves and celebrates?
