silicon valley races to develop electric cars - LA Time biz section says
sorry, not direct link, but summarizing from the printed paper june 26:

various silicon valley startups are working on electric cars, motivated by energy independence and profit.

companies include tesla motors, wrightspeed Inc and Li-on cells (in case you want to google for more info)
also commuter cars corp. selling its tango t600 2 seater

current designs aimed at high end market sports cars with cheaper models out as volume lowers prices of components.
current designs are not go to the store and home types, or glorified golf carts.

aim for 200+ miles per charge.

government safety regulations a big hurdle (cars must meet same requirments as gas cars)

developers aim to "break detroit's grip" on the US auto industry (guess they never heard of Japan lol)

"nobody in the world is better than silicon valley at solving electrical engineering problems."

the key technologies are in silicon valley, not detroit.

That's the summary, so people ARE working on the problem under the radar so to speak.

1. This 200 mile per charge barrier is great, but they need to
consider installing a small perhaps 5 to 10 horsepower motor that can run on propane that will charge the batteries up in a pinch... propane driven forklifts run just fine without creating pollution.... just my 2 cents.
