Anyone see Biden slap down Cheney yesterday?
BLITZER: Here's what the vice president, Senator Biden, Dick Cheney told our John King earlier in the week about one of those Democratic proposals that was defeated in the Senate. Listen to this.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DICK CHENEY, VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: The worst possible thing we could do is what the Democrats are suggesting, and no matter how you carve it, you can call it anything you want, but basically, it is packing it in, going home, persuading and convincing and validating the theory that the Americans don't have the stomach for this fight.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BLITZER: All right. You want to respond to the vice president, Senator Biden?

BIDEN: No, I don't want to respond to him. He's at 20 percent in the polls. No one listens to him. He has no credibility. It's ridiculous.

:bounce:

5. Another application of the "one percent doctrine" by Ron Suskind:
As long as * and/or Cheney has a one percent approval rating, they'll go ahead and destroy Iraq AND this country.

6. I believe that
Biden has the potential to do a lot of good for the country. But it requires that he go father than simply dismissing Cheney as unpopular. The House and Senate is supposed to hold people in the executive branch responsible for their misconduct and crimes. If Biden takes a strong stand against VP Cheney now, the nation would have the pleasure of "dismissing" him in a Constitutional sense.

9. One Step Forward, Two Backwards
When it comes to delivering a good zinger, Joe's been one of the best for over 20 years...he can take a good shot at this regime and then a few minutes later he'll start shooting at Democrats or voting for the bankruptcy bill or being part of the "Gang of 7" that sold out the Supreme Court.

Biden has no cajones for a real fight. Hopefully he's gotten that silly notion that he's presidential material out of his head.

After the initial (and well said) smack-down, he addressed the substance of dead-eye's statement.

15. My point is
that Biden has the ability to do more than participate in "smack-downs" and more serious discussions on television. He should consider addressing these issues in the Senate.

14. exactly...I just lost a longish post on this. ALL he had to do to
back his put down was to bring up the FACT that Casey's revealed plan is almost EXACTLY what the Dems want to do, and Cheney has once again shown himself to have NO regard whatsoever for the truth, and will say ANYTHING, do ANYTHING, the American public and soldier be damned

17. What did Biden say about torture?
When the two Americans were found and it was generally thought they might have been tortured, I thought of how tough Biden was with Gonzales and Ashcroft during Abu Ghraib discussions ("we don't torture so that our boys won't be tortured"). I anticipated that he would be in good position to remind the public how important the issue is, how the administration has failed in this regard, and that the administration has once again not made us safer, and that the administration has generally lowered us as a nation so that we are forced to talk about beheadings, torture, innocent murder of civilians, hate, white phosporous, etc..

Did he talk about this again?

a guy who is normally so overblown with his praise of people that sometimes you wonder if he's doing a parody.

When a guy like that disses you so thoroughly it has got to hurt bad. :-)

Cheney's poll ratings are where they are for a reason. And the reason is, people see him for what he is.

who are constantly bullied by the MSM , put in the position to defend themselves. Who would have thunk it Biden had it in him?

28. But he DID respond--taking the advice
of a blog linked by a thread posted here at DU last week, along the lines of "Dems should stop defending themselves from stupid accusations and go on the attack."

That is exactly what Biden did and in this case I think he did it very well.

33. He sometimes has GREAT smackdowns
great speeches - I just wish he'd follow them up with his vote. I WANT to like Biden, I really do, and when I'm watching him speak, he usually does a great job, but then he rarely follows up with a vote matching what he said. He could accomplish some wonderful things if his actions followed his words.

35. Senator Hagel had plenty to say, too!
BLITZER: I want Senator Hagel to weigh in as well. Go ahead.

HAGEL: Just a brief comment on the vice president's comments. In a speech I gave on the Senate floor, I specifically targeted that kind of rhetoric. War is a serious business. War should never be held hostage to a political agenda. I think both sides do a great disservice, especially to the men and women doing the fighting and the dying.

Not the people in Washington who are so anxious to send these guys to die and fight, but to them. We do a great disservice, and to our country, when we make this a political issue to say the Democrats did this, the Republicans did this. War is far more serious than that. I complimented Senators Levin and Reid on the floor of the Senate for their amendment. I complimented them, Wolf, because they brought forward a responsible amendment to debate. We didn't do that in Vietnam. And consequently, it was a disastrous ending when, in 1975, and Joe was here and I was here, we just pulled the plug. And we grabbed a hold of a helicopter and got out of Vietnam any way we could. We don't want that kind of ending here. We need to be serious about it. The Congress needs to be part of this. We're not potted plants.

BLITZER: Let me interrupt for a second. When you hear Republicans saying the Democrats only want to cut and run, that irritates you?

HAGEL: Well, it's wrong. I said so on the Senate floor, by the way. And I said specifically that "cut and run" is political phraseology. And we debase our system. We defeat who we are and we misdefine who we are, and do a great disservice to our country when we do this. Serious things deserve serious debate and serious issues by serious leaders. That's what America wants. That's why we're all so low in the polls. We're not doing that, Wolf.
