I finally realize why I'm a Lefty Liberal!!!

The other day I was at Best Buy looking for a gift for my 2 year old son. While I was walking down the children's video aisle I saw the "Schoolhouse Rock" compilation DVD which I immediately picked up and bought. Those of you over 30 remember Schoolhouse Rock it was a series of short cartoons that taught us about US history and reading, writing and arithmetic all set to snappy very memorable tunes.

When I got home I popped it into the DVD player and sat back to enjoy it with my wife and little boy. The menu came up and my wife said "Play The Preamble, thats a good one", so I complied. Listening and watching that little short cartoon almost brought tears to my eyes and it was easy to see why:

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

Then I realized why I'm a "left leaning liberal", its because I believe in this "mission statement" that our founding fathers in their wisdom provided us.

I also realized why the Republicans seek to attack us so much, its that they actually support policies that undermine this mission statement.

-They seek to limit "We the people" by finding ways to obstruct the democratic process both legally and illegally.

-They do not seek a more perfect Union, they seek to only promote the interests of a narrow segment of the population.

-They seek to undermine the Judicial system by attacking it's legitimacy.

-They seek to create discord and undermine domestic tranquility by using the Ann Coulters and Rush Limbaughs to sow distrust among our fellow citizens.

-They do seek to provide for the common defense, but they use this to go beyond the defense of our nation and expand it into unwisely projecting power overseas in direct conflict of our founding principles.

-"Promote the general welfare", no, instead the seek only to elevate the strong while abandoning the weak.

-Secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity. We see them seek to undermine those blessings by encouraging us to give up our constitutional protections in exchange for security.


I think that this mission statement (The Preamble) should be repeatedly used by our Democratic leadership to point out the errors in not only the Republican's leadership but more importantly, the errors in their underlying philosophy.

What do y'all think?

3. YES, it does. I LOVED Schoolhouse Rock as a kid and I too bought it for
my son when he was little. 'I'm just a bill' and every other Schoolhouse rock is on the DVD set. It's just wonderful.

5. Yeah, I always get blurry eyed when I hear the "mission statement" also.
Must've picked that up somewhere.

I think your analysis of the differences between the Democratic and Republican
ideals is on-the-mark.

I am actually not ashamed to say that I memorized the preamble because of that show.

on edit: Unfortunately, pointing out the inconsistencies of the GOP regarding the Constitution hasn't worked thus far. Civil rights and constitutional law aren't on the minds of most Americans.
