Movie-goers pack theater for Gore's documentary
Here's the best part - 'Those in attendance included much of Gainesville Regional Utilities' top management.'

Movie-goers pack theater for Gore's documentary

Jun 23, 2006

A protester wearing a George W. Bush mask suggested it wasn't the typical movie opening.

The fact a documentary film attracted overflow crowds, forcing the opening of a second theater for the 7:05 p.m. showing, proved the point.

Al Gore's global warming movie, "An Inconvenient Truth," opened Friday at the Regal Gainesville 14 in Butler Plaza. Gainesville civic leaders and other residents packed the 7:05 p.m. showing, thanks in part to clean-air advocates giving out tickets.

"We filled two theaters - I can't believe that," said Donna Isaacs, a University of Florida graduate student who has promoted energy-efficient measures in area construction. "I think this is going to make a big difference in Gainesville."

Those in attendance included much of Gainesville Regional Utilities' top management. The utility had been much criticized for pushing for a new coal-fired power plant to be built, in part because it would emit greenhouse gasses.

While the Gainesville City Commission is still considering options that include carbon dioxide-emitting plants, it has also instructed GRU to pursue energy conservation measures. Ed Regan, the utility's assistant general manager for strategic planning, said the city has already heeded the movie's call to reduce emissions.

1. I went to see it (for the 3rd time) Friday night...
at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, a classic and beautifully maintained theater where a pipe organist plays before every performance. The massive main auditorium was just about full and the crowd was very into it, laughing out loud, gasping at some of the scary facts, and snarling during scenes when *'s face would appear. It was a movie atmosphere I hadn't experienced since .... Fahrenheit 9/11.

6. It is still not listed on the "Inconvenient Truth" website
I kept checking it out to see when it would be in Gainesville. I cancelled the Gainesville Sun about a year ago. Once in a while I pick up the Sunday edition just to see what is going on. I cannot wait to see the film.

I saw that it was FINALLY playing in Gainesville (we usually get the *good* movies)...I cut across three lanes of traffic on Archer Rd., parked, and got tickets...I was so happy that it was here finally...

It was absolutely incredible, tons of people in the theatre, and everyone clapped at the end, and stayed to see all the suggetions about how we can help...if you live in Gainesville, call GRU and get GRU Green)...I want to see it again!!

16. My wife and I saw it last week.
We were impressed that the late showing (10 PM) had a nearly full theater. That's very unusual at that theater - we typically see about 2 or 3 people at that hour.
