Bless the ones that come home in one piece. But the rove machine will play it up for repukes favor and again using our military for political props.

3. I don't mind if the coverage is fair & balanced.
Offset with the caskets, I mean.

I like seeing them reunite w/ their families. I will NEVER forget watching the POW's come home from Vietnam. Never.

4. I refuse to paint ALL the soldiers with that
Haditha brush; not fair to those who didn't take part in atrocities of this kind.
We ARE killing lots of innocent people over there; I will direct my wrath for that at
this incompetent admin.

7. Yeah, tigerriot's post is very cruel towards the troops. I wonder
he thinks about, and how he treats, Vietnam vets. MKJ

5. Not That Many Are Willing To Be Props
This calls to mind the unfortunate fate of a local Iraqi war vet who had served two tours and the local Repugnicans thought they could use him as political fodder in the 2004 elections. When he told them he wasn't interested, they dissed him...I still see him marching proudly, alone, in the local 4th of July Parade as he wouldn't be part of the "party"...and how the local Repugnicans attempted to slime him for not playing prop for them and saying how we were wasting money and lives in the country. That was 2 years and a lot of IEDs ago.

Since the invasion began, I've communicated with another Iraqi vet...this one is about to shove off on his third tour...and openly admits the reason he goes is he likes "the action". Truth is he's a mechanic and will be in a garage fixing hummers inside the Green Zone...but he loves the combat pay. He's single and was breast fed right wing propaganda to where he speaks Rovian talking points without realizing how programmed he is. But even he has changed his tune. Where we used to argue the need for the invasion and the problems with contractors and profiteers, he doesn't dispute that now, just the "stay the course" bullshit. I ask him what he thinks the objective is in "winning"...and he has yet to come up with anything that resembles an answer other than "we stop them there before they blow up building here"...and I just mention Timothy McVeigh and that discussion even comes to a flying thud. He's definitely not as gung-ho going this time and I can sense a lot of fear in this interpid warrior.

One thing we do share, is our contempt for this regime. He has little respect for booosh and von Rumsfeldt, where he used to call them great leaders. He's seen too many of his buddies end up in coffins and VA hospitals. He also sees the incompetence that is tearing apart the military. He says the only reason he's going back is that his buddies are still there and there's nothing here for him. I just wish him well and to keep his head down...and to remind him that there are some of us here who will still be here when he returns...win, lose or draw...fighting for his veterans benefits and health care. He constantly says..."ya see lions can lie down with lambs". I almost take that as a compliment.

6.  Americans will be fooled again.........
and the pro-war lobby will get the pre-election bounce they so desperately need to justify the continuation of the carnage in Iraq. Shortly thereafter, the MSM will paint anti-war candidates as unpatriotic, complete with the backdrop of embracing husbands, wives and crying children. All with the intent of making those who don't follow suffer the consequences at the polls. Shit, this stuff comes so much like clockwork that you can set your calendar by it.

I wonder what it'll take to wake up our incurious republic?

11. Our local papers do this crap a lot.
Lots of huggies and sniffles for the troops in uniform by the big jet airplane.

9. We should demand balance from the media.
Edited on Sun Jun-25-06 11:14 AM by Radical Activist
Every time the media does one of these canned reports from the military with stone-faced troops telling us how they need everyone at home to support them (I saw another one yesterday) we should demand they show a returned Iraqi vet who opposes the war.

12. Good. Then we can point out all of the dead they didn't recognize.
Has anyone significant from this administration attended a single soldier's funeral yet? We'll stab their photo-op in their eye.

13. The tearful returns will be only of soldiers who are alive,
not the tearful "reunions" of soldiers returning in caskets.
