DU Propaganda Debunking Group to be deleted

Unless DU members save it, the DU Propaganda Debunking Group will be deleted on the 29th, so this is a last-ditch effort to save the group you didn't know about...

Description:
The DU Propaganda Debunking Group will provide information to discredit and or refute right-wing propaganda disseminated via, but not limited to: e-mail (hoaxes, urban legends, and chain letters); newspaper (opinion pieces, letters to the editor); 527 organizations (such as SBVT); and broadcast media (such as radio and television).

2. I've never looked at it, but immediately realized what a wonderful

tool it might be. And I disagree that its only useful at election times. Countering fascist lies is an ongoing need. We have to keep fighting them and not letting them establish the frame of the discourse, not letting them plant falsehoods and disinformation as part of the common fund of "knowledge."

Now that I know about it, I'm gonna go look at it & start using it for things like LTTE. I had often vaguely wished for something like this, not realizing that it was under my nose all this time.

I don't think many members ever knew about the group, so it never took off as I had hoped.

I was so sick of getting those stupid "send-this-lie-to-everyone-in-your-ditribution-list" e-mails, but I loved so many DUer responses to them that I thought it would be great to have them all in one location. (Perhaps I should have consulted with the astrology group about an auspicious start date!)

9. That seems to be the general consensus

I think the group launched during a major scandal (of course, when was there no major scandal?) Anyway, it's more of a reference group than an active ongoing group, so it just stalled.

12. This might work better as a forum with permanent subthreads.

If the propaganda debunking forum was organized into permanent areas such as Election Fraud-Ohio, Election Fraud-Texas, etc., as well as "Environmental Issues", "Al-Qaida", "9-11", "PATRIOT Act", "Wiretapping", Democrats-Kerry, Democrats-Hillary Clinton, Democrats- John Murtha... you get the point.

This way the debunking could be highly organized and easily researchable. I think this forum is absolutely necessary, but as clustered as it stands, it can't be used as much more than a temporary tool when a hot topic emerges.

Just my 2 cents.

I hope it's not deleted because it could be very useful. I like the "one-stop shopping" potential - it would be nice to go to one group and immediately have access to info that destroys all the RW talking points. It would probably be more of a reference page then an actual group - maybe it could be restructured somehow. :)

25. There have been several posts in GD in the last few weeks

from people who claim to have received e-mails from RW friends/family, looking for help to debunk them. I admit to posting a somewhat snarky comment on one of them, wishing that DU had a forum where this junk could be quarantined and processed by people who dedicate their time to such worthy activities (alright, I also admit that I wanted that junk to be taken off the GD forum where too many people might see it and absorb it -- at least I'm being honest with you).

I had no idead that such a forum existed and that there were people who did dedicate some time to looking after it. My apologies. Good for you! I don't have the patience nor the resources to do that. The next time I see such a post in GD, I will request that a modmin moves it to the Propaganda Debunking forum and your good graces.

I for one didn't even know there was a DU group that did that, and we get flooded with "need response to this email" or "help me with this argument with a freeper" posts in GD constantly.

If I would have known there was a group dedicated to that, I would have just started sending them there. It seems like a great resource.
