Can We Get "An Inconvenient Truth" Seen by 10,000,000 Americans?
Edited on Sat Jun-24-06 07:32 PM by IndyOp
I've got an idea.... :bounce:

Let's get Al on OPRAH!!

Oprah did a show on global warming with Leonardo DiCaprio - short video here.

Oprah doing an hour-long show with Al Gore about global warming would SET OFF A FIRESTORM OF ATTENTION -- get the topic and the movie seen by people who aren't newshounds, seen by the people who we need to make a difference in our world. How about sending emails and asking the producers to get on this?

http://www.oprah.com/email/reach/email_showideas.jhtml

If Oprah has a summer hiatus maybe it is too late to get Al on this summer, but it is likely that the producers work through the hiatus....

On edit: Add info about Leo DiCaprio...

1. two friends who live in remote communities have asked me ...
... to help them contact the filmmakers and negotiate permission to screen "An Inconvenient Truth" locally. They are both in areas which would be hit hard by global warming (west coast and the Arctic). Spreading the film out to smaller venues like this would help reach a lot of people.

2. Sinking......like most Inconvenient Truth posts.
The most important movie of the decade, IMO.

It has the power to awaken the world from it's apathy towards global warming.

Every DU'er should be running out to see this movie NOW. Even if they're "the choir" they will still learn something and also give the box office a boost.

Maybe I'm being a grump lately but it feels like folks around here are more concerned with supporting the Dixie Chicks than something REALLY important like this.

3. I saw it last week
I agree with Al Gore, it should be shown to every grade school child - which of course would never happen because of the wacko religious right

27. no it shouldn't
I saw it and this is the kind of movie the depresses little kids into inaction about environmental issues, it's a common problem actually. Still, every high schooler up should see it.

9. I just saw it
I already knew all the information on the subject because I have a brother-in-law who has been researching the subject, but I still was impressed and moved by the movie. Really moved. I have been talking myself blue om the face to people who thought I was just a commie fanatic, so I'm hoping more and more people start to take subject seriously. Gore seems like a man committed to a cause. I didn't know that he was in the college class of the scientist who was among the first to see the potential problems and the fact that it was happening.

10. I think it's a great idea
Has Oprah had a politician on before? Would she then have to have a Repug on for "balance"?

I think that after it's run in theaters and then on DVD, we have to get this film on network tv. :bounce:

15. I don't think she would try to have a Repug for "balance" -
I think she usually just selects a guest and goes deeply into their views. It seems she did a nice job when Leonardo DiCaprio came on to talk about Global Warming -- though I've only seen the short clip from the OP.

I am WITH YOU when it comes to thinking about what can happen with the film when it gets to DVD and then when it can be shown on network tv -- we've got to use ALL possible steps to get it seen far and wide.

My book is on order though. The trailer looks good and Roger Ebert's review is compelling me to go.

Al Gore on the show. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

17. Republican? The few political donations she's made were mostly to Dems...
http://www.newsmeat.com/billionaire_political_donations/Oprah_Winfrey.php

Admittedly I don't follow her very much so I don't know about her politics but she has always struck me as more Dem in the way she approaches social issues but sort of a-political otherwise so I'm curious why you say she's a Republican. :)

28. Hmm. She's definitely not a progressive Democrat - the sort of consumerism
she promotes on her show is definitely not liberal or good for the environment. (Shows talking about a $124 pair of pants being a steal? Come on!) She promotes a very wasteful consumerism, too. Even if she's donating to the Democrats, she's straddling the political fence (and leaning right) on her show - if the reason is to *not* alienate her Republican viewers, that's pretty damning in and of itself.

29. I have discomfort with her materialism, too. Her work on
racial and religious tolerance, recognizing and healing addictions, and *activating* people to take charge of their lives and take care of others (instead of being self-absorbed) is most definitely progressive.

Her most memorable guests - for me - are interviews with Nelson Mandela and Toni Morrison and Sidney Poitier and The Little Rock 9 and Mattie Stepanek. Stepanek's greatest hope was for world peace. Former President Jimmy Carter spoke at Mattie's funeral and said that Mattie was the person he admired most in the world - above and beyond the kings and queens he had met while traveling the world.

Also - just to give you a last bit of information - you may have missed Oprah's long term support of gay & lesbian adoption and acceptance and love for gays & lesbians. She has had multiple shows featuring gays and their biological or adoptive children and over and over she emphasizes that what matters is that the parents love each other and love their children.

When Nate Berkus - the resident Oprah! home decorator - lost his life partner Fernando Bengoechea, in the Tsunami 10 million viewers mourned.

The two biggest rated Oprah shows during that season was the show in which GM gave the entire audience cars (her staff worked to find an audience that *needed* cars) and the show in which Nate told his story about losing his beloved Fernando in Sri Lanka. If hatred is the result of ignorance - as Oprah contends - then 10 million people let Nate & Nate's partner into their hearts and are no longer ignorant of the fact that love is the same whether the partners are gay or straight.

31. Sounds like she's out of touch if she thinks $124. for a pair of pants is
a steal... well unless she's talking about some fancy designer I suppose. It's been a very long time since I've needed to or been able to afford "nice dress slacks" so I haven't a clue what they'd run normally anymore.

From what Indy posted in response to you and what you say she sounds very progressive in some ways and more moderate in others which sounds like many middle age mainstream Dems I know.

As for "wasteful consumerism" since I haven't watch her much at all I'm not familiar with how she promotes it (other then with some of her commercial sponsers of course ;) ).

16. Getting Oprah to have Gore would be great BUT they need to get IT out to->
more and smaller cities. I don't know about any other state but NY is not very well covered so far. Almost if not every theatre showing it is basically from the NYS thruway (draw a line from Albany/Troy to Buffalo) south.

We want very much to see it but the closest showing so far was about 2 1/2 to 3 hours away. What can I do to help get it shown up here?

22. Call your local movie theater and tell them to bring AIT
to YOU! Also, call/email your local friends and ask for the same. Write LTTE to your local paper and express the same request - call theater - get AIT in town!! If the people say they want to see it, chances are good that the theater will show it.

Although I do think the oil companies are probably influencing theaters, we still have to work the problem the same way - get locals to agitate the theater...

32. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll call the theatre & spread the word to
Edited on Sun Jun-25-06 09:52 PM by WePurrsevere
folks I talk with. (We're new here and in the country so I don't really know anyone very well yet but folks seem to like to talk to me in the places like the market. :) )

The local theatre I think will eventually have it. It's in a rather progressive college town so they may not be in a hurry to get it until the Fall when the population and movie watching population triples. :) I'll definately call and ask and have the few folks I do know call as well. :) If I don't get a response I want to hear I'll write a LTTE to give a bit of a nudge. :D

Thanks again for the ideas... hopefully we'll get it soon. B-)

33. Saw it on Friday night and had nightmares about
the ocean rising that night! Great movie.

I just can't get over how disastrous Bushco has been for this country.
It's very troubling that we may have already passed the turning point in global warming.

I noticed that the Sunday supplement--Parade Magazine--had a front page feature about global warming. Really surprised me since it's such a RW publication. NO mention of Al Gore or his movie in the story--but had a box recommending many of the actions he is promoting. However, the slant was mostly people should take individual action and not group political action.

We also had a front page story in Sunday Raleigh paper--reprinted from the LA Times--about the Greenland ice melt.

It does seem that there is more media attention to the issue.
