TIKRIT, Iraq - US forces apologised to a senior Sunni Arab religious leader and his two sons after arresting them in a raid on the family’s home they said was based on bad intelligence, an Iraqi security source said.

Sheikh Jamal Abdel Karim al-Dabaan and his sons were released on Saturday, hours after their arrests, said the source, an official at the joint US-Iraqi co-ordination centre in Tikrit, 175 km (110 miles) north of Baghdad.

There was no immediate comment from the US military.

3. How "bad" could the intelligence be?
It wasn't like they had the wrong address. This guy is heavy-duty.

Having worked with extraction units myself, I can tell you that there has been irreparable damage done via this bone-headed action.

His release will barely dampen the outrage that his (along with his sons', no less) seizure will cause. This will appear to be an action against the sheik's family.
BIG no-no.
