3. Family members are on CNN now, showing a Bible.
Edited on Fri Jun-23-06 11:23 AM by VolcanoJen
They say that one of the suspects read the Bible quite constantly. One of them is saying he was a peaceful, humble man.

He says that the suspect is misunderstood and feared... this is pretty interesting stuff...

Now they're saying the suspect is poor, has no money to fund any kind of terror attack, and has essentially been framed...

11. It's been unclear to me from the beginning if they
are "black Muslims" or "Black Muslims".

One's describing the skin color of some Muslims; the other's saying what Muslim sect they belong to.

It doesn't help in the least that a couple of sources routinely capitalize 'black' when referring to race (or that we capitalize the first word of sentences).

20. Maybe that's where they're coming from,
but I think it's still illegitimate to make a point of calling them "black" Muslims.
If there's evidence that they're members of the Nation of Islam, that should be said instead.

38. The Nation of Islam is not all of the Black Muslim movement.
There's also the American Muslim Mission and various other groups with roots in Wali Farad's teachings.

43. I agree.
But I don't understand all the differences in the various American Muslim sects. Have enough figuring out the more traditional ones.

The other possible reason for saying they're black is to counter the usual conclusion that since they're Muslims, they're Arabs. A sop to CAIR and Arab groups.

But that just makes what they're saying even more of a muddle.

Old proverb: Many a little makes a mickle (or 'muckle'; sometimes garbled into 'Many a mickle makes a muckle'). Well, in this instance many a little makes a muddle.

24. Actually it is important because they have their own religion and
are only vaguely associated with the Islamic world in the middle east. I think this whole thing is a bunch of "rover tales" to get voters afraid of the black population in our own country before the election. No one is falling for the rest of the fear mongering.

36. "Black Muslims" is the name...
...of a religious movement in the US. Yes, the Nation of Islam is a part of it. No, it is not the whole thing. It is not in any way a racist term. It is, in fact, what they call themselves.

40. I'm guessing they meant "Nation of Islam"
Not A-Muslim-Who-Happens-To-Be-Black (from say Somalia):

Some use the phrase to describe any person who is both Black and a Muslim, but Muslims are unlikely to do the same. Within Islam, race-based distinctions are supposed to be irrelevant. This is because Islam teaches equality, whereas unlike traditional Islam, the Nation of Islam preaches the divinity of Black people. This group's ambiguous relationship with traditional Islam necessitates distinguishing phraseology.

For example, Black Muslims is a phrase often used in the United States of America to denote members of Louis Farrakhan's separatist Black-nationalist movement, the Nation of Islam.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Muslim

To me, the idea of "black" and "white" suggests the entire genome can be sorted into albino and melanistic (which is binary thinking to say the least). There isn't a non-racist synonym for "a black person" except "a person", as Malcolm came to discover:

Malcolm X began traveling through Africa and saw how orthodox Islam was practiced. But it was not until he made a pilgrimage to Mecca three months later in 1964 that Malcolm X’s worldview -- and his belief in Islam -- changed dramatically. He described the hajj’s impact in a letter to a friend, written while he was in Mecca:

“There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world. They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blondes to black-skinned Africans. But we were all participating in the same ritual, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had led me to believe never could exist between the white and nonwhite.”

27. When we saw this on the news this morning, my hubby (a black man)
had an initial reaction of "If we think black men have had a hard time before, now it will get worse." And he's right. This is an excuse for suppression. Remember, we are in a climate where you can be picked up an disappear into a gulag without trial or even being told why you have been arrested.

Who's next?

35. Weren't any of you alive in the '60s? It was a common phrase
Edited on Fri Jun-23-06 12:04 PM by ThomWV
Black Muslims was one of the first really great catch-phrase buzzwords in the whole fabric of insults which were Nixon's southern strategy. It gave something for the old Democrats in the south to hate and the Party to which they could go to hate with others. Black Muslims, Black Panthers, black welfare mothers - and every one of them driving a Cadillac and working hard for the downfall of the United States of America. This was the mantra that spewed from the old Confederacy - a solid Democratic bloc before Eisenhower's VP got to work. How in hell do you think we lost the south?

At any rate the essential beauty of "Black Muslims" was that it could unite the KKK end of the bigotry chain to the praise Jesus end of the stick. A new Crusade so to speak. Its not much different today. Not only does this one allow you to hate blacks but you get to tie it to Islam at the same time. You think Republican's are gonna miss a chance to capitalize on that one?
