Rumsfeld Claims WMDs Have Been Found In Iraq

(AP) WASHINGTON Hundreds of chemical weapons found in Iraq were produced before the 1991 Gulf War and probably are so old they couldn't be used as designed, intelligence officials said Thursday.

..............

Asked about the potential danger to U.S. troops, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said: "They are weapons of mass destruction. They are harmful to human beings. And they have been found."

The newly declassified military intelligence report was released Wednesday by National Intelligence Director John Negroponte. Santorum and Hoekstra had urged him to release report this week during congressional debates on Iraq.

The senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee questioned the timing of the report's release. "What worries me is that the intelligence community -- Ambassador Negroponte in particular -- may be playing a partisan role in the 2006 election," California Rep. Jane Harman said.

Mr. Negroponte pointed out that he approaches all political issues in an unassailably even-handed manner.

"What could be more non-partisan than death squads?" she asked rhetorically.

____

If it was Negroponte's hope to embarrass Democrats with this information on WsMD, it has blown up in his face.

Santorum is the one who looks like a fool.

Maureen Dowd has already filed her column on this one, I bet.

4. And they criticize the Dems for not all being on the same page?
DoD says there were no WMD....Rummy now says there was.

The intelligence officials and WH say there were no WMD, but Santorum and other assorted wingnuts say there were.

Negroponte released this info (wasn't he given the ability to declassify anything he wanted by Bush in an executive order?) and we see where everyone is coming down on this. I wonder if this is a little vigilante leaking going on that the administration didn't approve of?

7. Boy O' would I love to pin him down on everything "harmful to human,...
,...beings".

This is weird. Didn't I just read that the DoD pulled back from Santorum's and, uh, whatshisface's assertion about discovering WMDs?

Maybe, I misread or interpreted a previous post on this matter.
