8. Desecration indeed
You're completely right. It is desecration. That poor flag is rubbing against his nether-regions. If I was a flag, I'd much rather be burned than suffer that fate.

Thanks for the welcome Sfexpat

never read...

Sec. 8. Respect for flag

No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America...

(snip)

(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery...

(snip)

(h) The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

(snip)

(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform...

That pretty much covers his entire ensemble.

27. I believe that you will find that most of the people who voice the
loudest opinions about someone *gasp* burning the flag, have never bothered to acquaint themselves with the rules of the flag. Most are not even aware of these rules and certainly aren't aware that burning a flag is the recommended way to dispose of a flag that is to be retired. They are also quite ignorant about the rules concerning how to display the flag (i.e. flying in inclement weather and after dark) and frequently show unintentional disrespect.

38. The "patriotic" people who fly them from their vehicles are the
ones that I usually spot. They allow these little flags to become filthy and tattered and then just toss them in the trash when they are through with them, never realizing in their zealous desire to impress people with their patriotism, that they are defiling the very object that they are claiming so loudly to respect.

Edited on Sat Jun-17-06 02:33 PM by mcscajun
one of the most common display errors are pickup trucks flying twin flags off the back bumpers/tailgate or flying it on the rear of a motorcycle. The principle is the flag always leads, it never follows. And those tattered self-contained flag/staff abominations that attach to a rear passenger window are an offense to the eyes.

41. Yes - it is descrating the flag:
(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

(b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water,

(c) The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.

(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.

(e) The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.

(f) The flag should never be used as a covering for a ceiling.

(g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.

(h) The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying or delivering anything.

(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.

(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

(k) The Flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

7. Oh no, I didn't get the memo.
Edited on Sat Jun-17-06 02:23 AM by Rosemary2205
I'm a born and bred progressive and no one told me it's batshit crazy to be patriotic. Here I've been going around with Patriotic stickers on my car, a flag flying on my house. I even have an eagle in front of the flag pic in my dining room. Every car I've ever owned is red, white or blue and I have cried more than once in my life singing America the Beautiful. I work at the polls on election day and go in my red/white and bluest finery. People usually smile at me, I thought it was happiness, now I'm wondering, maybe they are actually laughing at me.

Edit to add, no I don't wear flag clothes and agree that's a no no.

14. Heres the memo:
Edited on Sat Jun-17-06 03:39 AM by titoresque
Patriotism is more than singing the athem, or flying a flag. True patriots know this. Republicans who use the flag to divide and conquer are not patriotic, just assholes on a red white and blue bandwagon of ignorance and hate.
I own a flag and the only time I've ever flown it was the day after Bush stole '04. I cried as I hung it upside down in my front yard.

I won't fly it again until I can truly be proud to be an American. Today I am ashamed, and I have blood on my hands. We all do.

16. Gee thanks
nothing personal, but I think I'll keep on keepin on and wave my flag, put bunting on my wheelchair on national holidays, serve in my local government, volunteer to the local community and go ahead with my usual volunteer plans for most of my vacation time. I'll keep going down to the VA hospital with a fat wad of $5's and $singles to pay copays for them and I'll keep sending money to the medical clinics in various African countries that Bush saw fit to cut off. I'll keep criticizing the powers that be, keep pushing for the little guy. If I ever get out west again and get to see the purple mountain's majesty I'm liable to tear up a 2nd time. When I see blown up Iraq kids, I'll likely send Bush and all my reps another cuss note. I really don't mind if you want to laugh at me and call me batshit crazy for being grateful for what I have and mindful of needs elsewhere at the same time. I'm just an ignorant public school American liberal, what do I know? I hope you'll understand, I'm just too stupid to be ashamed ALL THE TIME so I'll leave that to you.

25. You aren't stupid, you're just not as jaded as us.
Which is probably a good thing.

In fact you seem quite bright since despite your penchant for patriotic fanfare you still vote as a liberal. I personally am kind of creeped out by this gentleman's uber-nationalism but that doesn't mean I think you suck because you have an emotional connection to the country. It sounds like you do very honorable work with the vets. Its important that there are liberals out there like you so the right can't paint us all as unpatriotic.

I'm kind of in a different boat, however. I feel ashamed of what our country represents to the rest of the world. I've been turned off by symbolic displays of patriotism ever since the administration hijacked these icons and used them to represent American belligerence. I'm even contemplating burning a flag (in a non-public place) if the amendment passes through congress just to do it while it's legal. But thats just me. I don't think you are any less of a liberal (or stupid) if you don't share in my irreverence for nationalistic symbolism. We are all on the same side when it comes to the important things.

This hall, this Democratic Party are filled with veterans who have served under the American flag. And this is our flag. Right there, that flag, we saluted this flag. We rose up in the morning and stood reveille to this flag. We fought for that flag. We've seen brave men and women buried under that flag. That flag is ours, and nobody, nobody will take it away from us. ~ Wesley Clark, Democratic National Convention speech, July 2004

33. sorry
I have never worn RW&B or flown a flag except the rainbow peace flag. Nationalism and adoration of a piece of cloth sucks. All of the flag waving by repukes reminds me of Nazi Germany's over use of their symbol. I also tell my children they are free to not say the pledge of allegience in school.

Here in the south at public events where the pledge is recited they always end it with a very loud "AMEN"! :wow:

22. Small story
I once knew a American born here and lived here for his early years but his parents were German so he had to go back and go in to the Youth groups and he was at the Nuremberg Rally or some of them. He said all that music, flags etc and Hitler in his car just really got to him. It is un-natural nationalism to my way of thinking. Jingoism I think they call it. It is always scary to have some one who will say 'my country right or wrong'. I look at that man and I am sure he would have lovers the Nuremberg Rally. My friend was in the German Army. His youth(17/18), American birth, and speaking both German and English saved him from more than a few months in a POW camp.

Flag worshipers. Banner-olotors. People who are so brain-washed and rabid in demanding their narrow ideology be ensconced into law. People so blind that they crap on the very symbols they purport to support. This man cares nothing about the flag, or any of that jingo he probably spews. Look at him gesturing with his pathetic, gutless/macho finger. He wants to see the world around him forced to accept his narrow ideology. This man should feel shame for exploiting the flag. But, in his rabidness for control of the microphone, he probably has no shame at all.
