So what's this "North American Union" item righties are ranting about?
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 07:44 AM by mainegreen
Lately I've noticed a lot of hubub about some "North American Union" our *ahem*, esteemed friends on the right are going on about. As near as I can tell they're convinced * is implementing a North American equivalent of the European Union. Evidently the following will occur:

  • "there will be no area of immigration policy, trade rules, environmental regulations, capital flows, public health, plus dozens of other key policy areas countries that the U.S. government will be able to decide alone, or without first consulting with some appropriate North American Union regulatory body"

  • the dollar will evidently be replaced with the..... Amero!

  • internal migration between Mexico, Canada and the US will be open and unstructured, like the EU

  • there will be no tariffs on any goods between the three countries

  • Environmental policies for all three countries will be regulated by a single panel

  • Bush is in cahoots with the Rockefellers to implement this (?!)

Here's a lovely example of this sort of thinking.

Anyone care to explain this nonsense to me? Because I sure as hell can't make heads or tails out of it!

4. It's about taking NAFTA to its logical conclusion....

This report examines these and other changes that have taken place
since NAFTA’s inception and makes recommendations to address the
range of issues confronting NorthAmerican policymakers today: greater
economic competition from outside North America, uneven development
within North America, the growing demand for energy, and
threats to our borders.

The Task Force offers a detailed and ambitious set of proposals that
build on the recommendations adopted by the three governments at
the Texas summit of March 2005. The Task Force’s central recommendation
is establishment by 2010 of a North American economic and
security community, the boundaries of which would be defined by a
common external tariff and an outer security perimeter.

6. That article was written by a swiftboater.
Jerome Corsi.

Hm. Is someone catapulting the propaganda, or is
this NAFTA-Plus deal for real?

7. Thats what I'd like to know.
The whole NAFTA-Plus thing (especially the Amero nonsense) just does not make sense to me. Our government (* included) has fought tooth and nail to maintain certain tariffs against Canadian goods.
We have fought the Euro based Iranian bourse, which would be silly if we were ditching the dollar.
The Mexican border fence makes no sense with a North American union goal.

It's like they've spun so hard they no longer know which way is right!

9. Is this a red herring?
If so, Repukes can claim they're against it
just before the November 7th election.

Remember Wag The Dog?

"There is no B-3 Bomber, and I don't now how these rumors
get started."

Fast forward: "There is no Amero plan, and I don't now how these rumors
get started."

11. the Republican coalition isn't a monolithic group
Corporate interests have a strong interest in lowering trade barriers and opening new markets to exploitation.

The Tom Tancredo's of the world wouldn't like it, but Bush's buddies I could see being all for it.

8. I personally wouldn't be against
some sort of North American zone. Beats the heck out of wars to try for economic hegemony.

10. It's the slave empire dreamed of by the old Confederacy
once they won the "war of yankee agression", they'd conquer and colonize Latin America.
