LOCAL DEMOCRATS working to STOP right wing HATE RADIO!!!
Edited on Thu Jun-15-06 02:05 PM by Vinnie From Indy
Here in my fair city of Indianapolis, Indiana a radio listener has a smorgasbord of right wing hate radio programs to choose from all day long. One can listen to Rush Limbaugh, Michael Wiener(Savage), Joe Scarborough, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity, Bill O'reilly, Dr. Laura, Glenn Beck, Neil Boortz and a few assorted locally grown right wing hate mongers on several AM stations serving this area. Each day these programs spew a couple dozen hours of lies, smears and slime directed at all things Democrat and Liberal. It is relentless. There is no Air America Radio or anything remotely equivalent.

During a quick run through of the stations today while driving I was struck by the amount of local advertising on each program. Car dealers, hospitals, florists, meeting centers and jewelers were just a few of the local advertisers PAYING to appear on these hate spewing programs.

Indianapolis is one of the bluest parts of red state Indiana and it has elected a Democrat for mayor the last few years. That means that the MAJORITY of people listening to the radio are DEMOCRATS. This majority is subjected to relentless and unvarnished hate EVERY DAY by these hosts and the LOCAL ADVERTISERS that support them. I plan on making a suggestion at our next planning meeting for the Democratic Party that we formulate a plan to push back against this tidal wave of lies and hate by pressuring the local advertisers to cease their support of these programs. I will propose that we publish and distribute to all local Democrats a brief summary of the outrageous comments of Limbaugh etc. and list ALL of the local advertisers running ads on their programs. The goal is not to directly attack Limbaugh, but rather to let a HUGE chunk of the population know that these businesses are PAYING to support programs that attack them, their families and their ancestors and then ask them if they feel comfortable buying a car from Bill Estes Chevrolet the next time they need one. In short, local Democrats need to raise the price of doing business with Rush Limbuagh MUCH higher for the local businesses that do so. I have had it with the daily tsunami of lies and hate that attack generations of my family and I am furious at the local businesses that ENABLE guys like Hannity and Limbaugh through their continued advertising. If these businesses want to see the effects of advertising, let's see how they like being tied to some of these quotes in an ad!

"Well, the Democrats will eat that up because, while they can't trust George W. Bush, they can trust Osama bin Laden."
Rush Limbaugh

"Some of these babes, I'm telling you, like the sexual harassment crowd. They're out there protesting what they actually wish would happen to them sometimes."
Rush Limbaugh

"take that bone out of your nose," Said by Rush Limbaugh to an African-American caller.

"what's good for Al Qaeda is good for the Democratic Party."
Rush Limabaugh

These are just a few of the most vile and disgusting slurs thrown at Democrats. Sadly, there are hundreds more.

WE DON'T HAVE TO TAKE THIS SHIT! Local advertisers need to know that THEY DON'T JUST SELL TO THE RIGHT WING and if they choose to advertise on these programs, we will tell every Democrat in the county about it.

3. You have made an excellent point.
I am in central Maine for the summer, and I have been scrolling the radio dial trying to find a talk radio station that I can listen to. All I can find in the Waterville area is Rush, Sean, Mike Savage, Mike Gallagher, Howie Carr, etc. It is absolutely sickening. Even the news on the hour is Fox News!!! Arrrggggg!! Your post has given me something to do. I will try to listen to this garbage station long enough to get a good handle on the local advertisers and write to them with the Rush quotes asking them if this is the kind of rhetoric they want their names associated with. Thanks for making this point.

7. A radio
station is in the business to make money. If the progressive movement was seen as a viable base that would warrent businesses to spend money supporting (advertising) on AA programs, the station would carry them. A "good" program manager, not one that programs to his beliefs, will offer programing that will generate the most add dollars for the station. If Franken and other left leaning hosts do not support a listener base that would justify advertising dollars, well, no programing. Want to listen to AA, get Serrius or XM.

9. You are missing my point completely!
I am not in any way pushing for any radio station to add or eliminate any programming. It is their business and they can do what they want, how they want and when they want in regard to running their business. No problems there. IF Indy won't support Air America, so be it.

I plan on giving Rush Limbuagh and any local business that advertises on his show additional free advertising. The only thing is that my advertisments have a large but narrowly focused audience - Democrats and Liberals IN INDIANAPOLIS.

For example, if John Smith Chevy in Indy runs three spots on Rush Limbaugh everyday, they are, in effect, subsidizing his program. I say bully for them! I do not care how they run their business either. If they LOVE Rush Limbaugh and other right wing hate radio hosted programs and they want to advertise to his listeners, I say have at it.

I am simply going to ask LOCAL Democrats if they want to support a LOCAL business that supports a program that insults and degrades them every day.
It is really quite simple.

14. It is not
an issue of "they love Rush Limbaugh", it is the fact that Limbaugh commands a large audience, which translates into a large advertising base. The other option that everyone has is to get investors together and purchase a radio station. The station can program what they want. solve the problem, However, remember that AA is broadcasting in NY, a very liberal city and the ratings suckl, If the programming pulls such lousy ratings in a city that big, what happens to a mid-western city that may be liberal leaning but once outside the city limits, it turns conservative,

My politics would not affect business decisions. I would want to reach as many people as possible to get as many as possible thru the doors. And only having a limited amount of advertising dollars, I would have to make some decisions that would be contrary to my politics. But every business owner has the choice of political principal or making sure you can pay your employees

I dont see how anyone can tell since there are no left wingers on radio in most markets.

16. They tried it in a Liberal Town like Gainesville
And it fell flat on its face. And no there was no "evil concerted effort" to get them to fail. Noone was listening. They had two liberal hosts, one in the morning drive slot and one in the 3-6 slot. Both the prime prime spots, better than limbaugh's. They still fell flat.

15. So true, I concur
Only if you can show that progressives are ready to spend them dolla's will you be able to sell AA radio. Until then, I agree, XM or Sirius.

18. The DNC doesn't acknowledge there even is a problem
Believe me, myself and others have tried to convince them of the necessity to fight back on the air. They will not listen. They don't think radio is important.

11. Going after advertisers is how the RW forced liberals oft the air
They are still doing it now to AirAmerica.

A coordinated campaign against advertisers is the only way to attack RW hate radio.

12. Vinnie! A year or so ago here at DU someone told me that
to get Air America into a market - one can target a Clear Channel (or other?) Station that has low ratings and then circulate a petition to that station to change its format to Air America. They were able to direct me to a website that had Arbitron ratings and pointed out an AM Clear Channel station in Indiana(polis?) with low ratings. I can't locate Arbitron ratings online, but I did find three Indiana stations on the Clear Channel website - Q95, X103, and WNDE 1260-AM. Q95 and X103 are, I assume, doing well, but how about WNDE? Any other stations up there that might be interested in Air America?

Maybe you contact them and find out how they are doing... What to do to propose bringing in Air America?

13. I agree that this problem needs to be addressed by our side
I firmly believe that the airwaves being packed with unopposed, right-wing lies and propaganda is the main reason that Republicans have gotten the edge politically in the last decade or so.

I have had correspondence with our local radio station manager who plays a few hours of Air America programming in between right-wing shows. He claims to be liberal himself and wants to air more AAR but he says that local businesses are AFRAID to advertise during AAR programs because they don't want to offend customers! And yet these businesses will advertise with no qualms on shows that offend and slander liberals! The other point he made was that most local business owners are right-wingers. (Fools!)

So you are right. We really need to do something about this. I am going to make myself listen to some of the right-wing programming :puke: just to find out who is advertising. Then I'm going to listen to the AAR programs on that same station and see who is advertising. Those companies that advertise on BOTH types of programming....I don't have a problem with. But those that advertise only on the right-wing programs will no longer get my business and I will write and tell them so. Also, I will put together a little article on those businesses and the situation to put in our local Dem club newsletter and hopefully some others will do the same.

I'm really appalled that so few on our side, have attempted to counter-attack the right-wing radio. If they don't think radio matters, they are idiots.

17. This is a great point. If someone puts up actual quotes from these shows,
that will give DUers fuel to complian to their local advertisers. We need a concerted effort. This would be a great pan-DUer project... wonder if there's a way to organize this on the DU site?
