Yet another Darwin Award nominee
This from Houston:

"As the officer was arresting him, Martinez told him that he wished he had time to eat the banana split he just purchased.

The officer took a close look at the melting dessert and discovered two rocks of crack cocaine on top.

Officials said Martinez was charged with driving with a suspended license and possession of a controlled substance."

Gold Hunter Digs 60 Foot Deep Hole in Front Yard

(AP) MONTCLAIR, Calif. Workplace safety officials say they're planning a visit today to the Montclair home of a man who dug a 60-foot-deep hole in his front yard while digging for gold.

They're coming to determine how to shore up and fill the hole that 63-year-old Norm Enrique says he began digging ten days ago after his gold detector reported a positive hit near his front patio.

He says he only planned to go down three or four feet but got "carried away."

Fire officials called to the scene yesterday found two men that Enrique hired inside the unreinforced hole, using a bucket and rope to remove dirt.

4. My nominee for the 2006 Darwin award winner is this guy
God fails to save idiot in lion enclosure

www.theregister.co.uk/2006/06/11/rzsl_week_4/

It's bad news this week for those who were hoping some divine intervention would help humanity overcome its power-thirsty animal attackers.

A man in Ukraine set out to prove that the Lord would protect him when he clambered into the lion enclosure at a Kiev zoo Sunday, The St Petersburg Times reports.

An official at the zoo said: "The man shouted 'God will save me, if he exists', lowered himself by a rope into the enclosure, took his shoes off and went up to the lions."

The man got his answer when an affronted lioness grabbed him by the throat and killed him in front of horrified visitors. The official helpfully explained: "A lioness went straight for him, knocked him down and severed his carotid artery."

3. Gotta take yourself out of the gene pool for a Darwin Award
So, while Mr. Martinez certainly wouldn't be doing the world any favors by perpetuating his genetic line, he's not eligible for a Darwin Award.

6. He can still produce fertile offspring (presumably)
so he can still contribute to the collective gene-pool. Though I doubt his gene's are the problem. I think the crack is the culprit.
