Moveon.org: Brian Bilbray voted against net neutrality?...

Moveon.org needs to be more careful in how they craft their customized emails. As a registered voter in the 50th district, here's what I just got today. Huh? I don't think he even had his "fake" swearing in ceremony yet last Thursday, let alone be officially sworn in, which we'll need to wait a few weeks for, IF he's found to have won most of the votes and we don't have a hand recount that might show otherwise!

Bilbray might also try to claim that you are slandering him too, saying that he did something which he didn't.

Please Moveon. Don't insult us with such an email here. It's hard enough having to deal with this loss as it is!

Dear (me),

Your representative, Brian Bilbray, dealt a blow to Internet freedom last Thursday.

As millions of us raised our voices to defend the free and open Internet2, Internet operators like AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast spent millions lobbying the House of Representatives to kill Net Neutrality. A majority of the House members caved—voting for a telecommunications law that would give these companies more control over what you see and do online.

All eyes are now on the Senate, which considers this issue next. We face a more friendly environment there, but we've got to act fast—the telecom lobbyists are working on every vote.

Can you call Rep. Bilbray to express your outrage, and then call Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer to demand support for Net Neutrality?
Here are the numbers:

Congressman Brian Bilbray
Phone: 202-225-5452

Senator Dianne Feinstein
Phone: 202-224-3841

Senator Barbara Boxer
Phone: 202-224-3553

Please click here to let us know you called and to share how it went:

Tell your Senators to protect Net Neutrality by supporting the bipartisan Snowe-Dorgan Internet Freedom Preservation Act (S. 2917).

When you call your House member, let them know that when the free and open Internet is at stake, that's a serious issue—it affects everything. Voting for any bill that does not protect Net Neutrality is absolutely inexcusable.
Thanks for keeping the pressure on Congress as we fight to save the Internet.

P.S. Here are the relevant votes:

Markey Net Neutrality Amendment (A vote for Internet freedom was "Aye"):

Bad overall COPE telecommunications bill without Markey Amendment that passed the House and gutted Net Neutrality (A vote for Internet freedom was "No"):
http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2006/roll241.xml

Voting the wrong way on either or both was a vote against Internet freedom—for which members of Congress should be help accountable.

P.P.S. After you call Rep. Bilbray and Senators Feinstein and Boxer, are you still outraged?

The best way to fight back after calling Congress is to help expand the reach of our coalition. Ask 5 friends to join our fight for Internet freedom by signing our petition to Congress:

1. I think they mean that Bilbray has been an outspoken opponent of
net neutrality and his 'victory' strikes another blow to keeping the net as is.

2. Moveon.org just sent out a correction for this email...
Edited on Thu Jun-15-06 11:22 AM by calipendence
Must have been a few of us sending replies to that... Figured it was an honest "data" mistake... Just frustrating to see when this bastard is trying to find every rationalization for being called our rep already before the smoke has cleared! Though they have said that he has "won" the election. I wish they'd still be as skeptical as Brad's Blog has been until the election is certified!

Dear (me),

This week, hundreds of members of Congress were held accountable by constituents for their votes on Net Neutrality last Thursday.

Unfortunately, due to a data error, we mistakenly said your representative, Brian Bilbray, voted the wrong way on Internet freedom—in fact, Rep. Bilbray has not yet voted on this issue since winning a special election recently.

We're sorry for the error—we make every effort to avoid this kind of thing. But we didn't want to let it be uncorrected.

This issue has now moved to the Senate, and we will keep you informed of how we can work together to ensure the Senate does the right thing and protects Net Neutrality.

Thanks for all you do as we fight to save the Internet.

4. With that email, moveon is just LEGITIMIZING the swearing in of Bilbray
before the election results are certified. What ever are they thinking? Are they oblivious to the San Diego county issue of voting machines being sent home with poll workers, thereby making all San Diego county results uncertifiable - if CA and federal election laws were actually to be followed?
