Top Sunni asked Bush for pullout timeline

Thu Jun 15, 4:25 AM ET

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq's vice president has asked President Bush for a timeline for the withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraq, the Iraqi president's office said.

Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi, a Sunni, made the request during his meeting with Bush on Tuesday, when the U.S. president made a surprise visit to Iraq.

"I supported him in this," President Jalal Talabani said in a statement released Wednesday. Al-Hashimi's representatives could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday.

Bush made it clear during his visit that the U.S. military presence — now at about 132,000 troops — would continue, though he stressed the fate of the Iraqis was in their own hands.

1. The chimp isn't going to like that one bit...
A timeline for the withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraq?

Worm-boy has said many times that he won't do that.

2. This completely coincides with what Kerry has been saying - the parliament
members he met with last September specifically wanted a timeline for withdrawal, and asswipes like the GOPs and Biden and other Dems keep saying NO, it helps the insurgents - they are wrong. A timeline helps the Iraqis who are SERIOUS about functioning as their own government in an UNoccupied country.

6. Exactly!

Since al Qaeda's main purpose in Iraq is violence against Americans, and the Iraqis are likely to fight foreign intervention in their country's affairs, why not withdraw? Wouldn't removing a target of violence help the Iraqis isolate the foreign fighters and help the Americans refocus on fighting global terrorism?

7. Yes - and if Gary Hart, John Murtha, Bob Kerrey and Tom Hayden can all see
this as a viable plan, what's with Bill and Hill, Biden, and all those Dems trying to discourage Kerry's amendment for withdrawal.

10. Bush won't accept it - they're busy attacking Kerry and Murtha over this
for months now and they just ramped up a new campaign against the two of them.

8. INTERESTING... Chimp didn't mention this. It is Big News.
Kind of undercuts the partisan debate going on now, doesn't it? They are asking for what the Democrats are proposing.

11. That's quite a bit different than proposals for us to set a timetable
unilaterally, presumably to get the Iraqis to get to do what them to do.

13. Uh-oh. Time to go.
Or time to re-invade. Dubya can only blow them off for so long before they get pissed and he has to add "rogue Iraqi parliament" to the list of threats to America.
